High dynamic range image compression based on the multi-peak S-shaped tone curve

Tone
mapping

aim
to
compress
the
high
dynamic
range
(HDR)
images
so
that
they
can
be
displayed
on
common
devices.
The
tone
curve
plays
a
key
role
in
many
methods,
which
directly
adjust
of
HDR
image.
S-shaped
curves
produce
impressive
performances
due
their
flexibility.
However,
conventional
is
single
and
had
problem
excessive
compressing
dense
grayscale
areas,
resulting
loss
details
this
area,
insufficient
sparse
low
contrast
mapped
This
paper
proposes
multi-peak
(MPS)
address
these
problems.
Specifically,
interval
image
divided
according
significant
peak
valley
distribution
histogram,
each
by
an
curve.
We
further
propose
adaptive
based
luminance
adaptation
mechanism
human
visual
system,
effectively
reduce
compression
areas
increase
preserving
while
improving
images.
Experiments
show
our
MPS
replaces
relevant
for
better
performance
outperforms
state-of-the-art
methods.

Common
displays
have
limited
dynamic
range
and
therefore
cannot
support
direct
reproduction
of
high
(HDR)
images.
Generally,
this
gap
can
be
effectively
solved
by
image
tone
mapping.
One
the
typical
mapping
methods
is
known
as
layer
decomposition
based
algorithms.
They
decompose
an
HDR
into
base
detail
layers,
reduce
employing
gamma
functions
on
layer.
However,
simple
curves
are
not
sufficient
to
produce
good
local
contrasts.
This
paper
proposes
a
method
utilizing
fusion
techniques
enhance
Our
constructs
virtual
images
stretch
dark,
normal
bright
regions
respectively
fuses
them
together
for
contrast
enhancement.
Experimental
results
validate
that
proposed
produces
enhanced
contrasts
more
natural
colors
in
tone-mapped
