ABSTRACT In mimicry, a species signals fitness cost or benefit to receiver by resemblance another model species. While ants are among the most frequent models, few cases of ant mimicry known in stink bugs (Pentatomidae). Here, using geometric morphometric analysis, we propose that Rio nymphs might mimic Cephalotes ants.

Abstract Stinging ants have diversified into various ecological niches, and several evolutionary drivers may contributed to shape the composition of their venom. To comprehend underlying venom variation in ants, we selected 15 Neotropical species recorded a range traits, including ecology, morphology, bioactivity. Principal component analysis both morphological bioactivity traits revealed that stinging display two functional strategies. Additionally, phylogenetic comparative indicated function (predatory, defensive, or both) mandible morphology significantly correlate with amount, while pain-inducing activity trades off insect paralysis. Further biochemistry switches between cytotoxic neurotoxic compositions some species. This study highlights fact ant venoms are not homogenous, for species, there major shifts associated diversification functions. Significance Venoms under severe pressures, exerted either on innovation toxins reduction metabolic cost production (1). reduce costs secretion, venomous animals can regulate expenditure by metering amount injected switching offensive defensive (2–2). Many use subduing wide arthropod prey, as well purposes against invertebrates vertebrates, but unable adapt stimuli (5, 6). Consequently, expression genes directly affects ability interact biotic environment, be fine-tuned ecology each A previous showed exhibit an trade-off which presence sting is negatively correlated other further supporting trade-offs constrain trait evolution influence (7). However, used same purpose depending Our supports deter vertebrates paralyze insects different life history strategies among Formicidae.

Stinging ants have diversified into various ecological niches, and selective pressures may contributed to shape the composition of their venom. To explore drivers underlying venom variation in ants, we sampled 15 South American rainforest species recorded a range traits, including ecology, morphology bioactivities. Principal component analysis both morphological bioactivity traits reveals that stinging display two functional strategies where evolved towards either an exclusively offensive or multi-functional Additionally, phylogenetic comparative indicates function (predatory, defensive both) mandible correlate with volume. Further biochemistry revealed switches between cytotoxic neurotoxic compositions among species. Abstract A new ant species was discovered in the heart of New York City 2011, which garnered national headlines and created memorable nickname “ManhattAnt.” is one oldest largest cities North America has been site introduction for some America’s most damaging invasive pests. Nevertheless, there little follow up research on ManhattAnt since its discovery, it yet to be formally identified. Here we use genetic morphological approaches confirm identity characterize introduced range colony structure. Results from analyses placed within Lasius emarginatus complex, comparisons ruled out closely related identify as European L. with 93–99% certainty depending nest sample. Since initial become common ants spread at a rate 2km/yr into Jersey onto Long Island. Based climate inhabits native range, could expand cover much eastern United states Massachusetts Georgia. Although many successful display supercoloniality aggression between neighboring nests, found no evidence that colonies are supercolonial. Continued monitoring warranted, increasingly reported an indoor pest known form mutualisms honeydew producing pests street trees.

Distressed western carpenter ants, Camponotus modoc, produce alarm pheromone and substrate-borne vibrations. The attracts nestmates but the effects of vibratory signals, or bimodal pheromonal are not known. Worker ants two congeners reportedly stand still ("freeze") run fast in response to engineered drumming vibrations inputted on plastic, many responses ant-produced signals wood have yet been investigated. Generally, orientating toward signalers under vertebrate predator attack seems maladaptive beneficial ant colonies. We tested hypotheses (1) that cause freezing, rapid running attraction nestmates, (2) modulate monomodal thereby possibly reducing predation risk. Laser Doppler vibrometry recordings revealed ants' readily propagate through nest lamellae, thus quickly inform mates perceived threats. With a speaker modified record deliver we obtained distressed Douglas fir veneer, bioassayed signal an arena with suspended veneer floor. In playback ran rapidly, froze, did approach signals. Exposed pheromone, frequently visited source. However, concurrently exposed both source less often spent more time "frozen." modulated seem adaptive reproductive fitness benefits be quantified.

Abstract Aggression is an essential component of survival and fitness, although the expression aggression behaviors can also carry fitness costs. As a result, aggressive vary significantly across animals are likely acted on by natural selection to produce this variation. Aggression, associated traits like nestmate discrimination, both complex traits, have well studied genetic components, with links genes involved in processes neuronal function, metabolism, hormone cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) production reception. However, whether how acts these variation species not fully understood. Using comparative genomics approach, we analyzed ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) candidate previously linked traits. We find that shifts intensity, including positive neurotransmitter receptors, low levels discrimination experience or relaxed several CHC genes. Interestingly, most ants, regardless level ability. Our results shed new light means which may act ants.
