Smoothness is a main characteristic of goal-directed human movements. The suitability approaches quantifying movement smoothness dependent on the analyzed signal's structure. Recently, activities daily living (ADL) received strong interest in research aging and neurorehabilitation. Such tasks have complex signal structures kinematic parameters need to be adapted. In present study we examined four different quantify ADL. We tested appropriateness these approaches, namely number velocity peaks per meter (NoP), spectral arc length (SAL), speed metric (SM) log dimensionless jerk (LDJ), by comparing signals from eight healthy elderly (67.1a ± 7.1a) with young (26.9a 2.1a) participants performing an activity (making cup tea). All were able identify group differences (Cohen's d NoP = 2.53, SAL 1.95, SM 1.69, LDJ 4.19), three revealed high very sensitivity (z-scores: 1.96 0.55, 1.60 0.64, 3.41 3.03, 5.28 1.52), showed low within-group variance (NoP 0.72, 0.60, 0.11, 0.71), two correlations between first second half task execution (intra-trial R2s: 0.22 n.s., 0.33, 0.36, 0.91), one was independent other (SM), while models multiple linear regression (R2s: 0.61, 0.48, 0.70). Based our results make suggestion toward use measures. total proved most appropriate ADL, as long trial durations are controlled.

Impairments in dexterous upper limb function are a significant cause of disability following stroke. While the physiological basis movement deficits consequent to lesion pyramidal tract is well demonstrated, specific mechanisms contributing optimal recovery less apparent. Various interventions (motor learning methods, neurostimulation techniques, robotics, virtual reality, and serious games) associated with improvements motor performance, but many patients continue experience limitations object handling everyday activities. Exactly how we go about consolidating adaptive behaviors through rehabilitation process thus remains considerable challenge. An important part this problem ability successfully distinguish extent which given gesture determined by neuromotor impairment that compensatory mechanism. This question particularly complicated tasks involving manual dexterity where prehensile movements contingent upon task (individual digit movement, grasping, manipulation…) its objective (placing, two step actions…), as personal factors (motivation, acquired skills, life habits…) contextual cues related environment (presence tools or assistive devices…). Presently, there lack integrative studies differentiate processes structural changes neurological those behavioral change response situational constraints. In text, shall link between impairments, strategies individual performance tasks. scoping review will be based on clinical studies, discussed relation more general findings hand (manipulation objects, tool use daily activity). We discuss further quantitative human manipulation ecological contexts may provide greater insight into behavior upper-limb function.

Despite their potential, the use of serious games within immersive virtual reality (iVR) for enhancing motor skills in older adults remains relatively unexplored. In this study, we developed a self-adaptive game iVR called REAsmash-iVR. This involves swiftly locating and striking digital mole presented with various distractors. short-term longitudinal pre-post study aims to evaluate REAsmash-iVR's efficacy promoting learning adults. Specifically, seek determine transfer retention achieved through REAsmash-iVR other tasks. A total 20 participated engaging over 7 consecutive days. The evaluation included tests such as KinematicsVR VR adaptation Box Block Test (BBT-VR). tasks drawing straight lines circles fast accurately possible, while BBT-VR required participants move cubes quickly possible 60 seconds. Assessments were conducted before after intervention, follow-up at 1 week post intervention. primary outcome focused on evaluating impact speed-accuracy trade-off during Secondary outcomes analyzing movement smoothness, measured by spectral arc length, scores. Results revealed significant improvements intervention compared that notable (t19=5.46; P<.001; Cohen d=1.13) circle (t19=3.84; P=.001; d=0.787). Likewise, there was enhancement particularly (χ²2=11.2; P=.004; ε2=0.23), but not straight-line (χ²2=2.1; P=.35; ε2=0.003). Additionally, demonstrated improvement (q=5.26; r=0.678) (q=6.82; r=0.880) skills. These findings provide perspectives improve delivering targeting cognitive functions. Abstract Background Frailty is accompanied by limitations of activities daily living (ADL) and frequently associated with reduced quality life, institutionalization, higher health care costs. Despite the importance ADL performance for consequence frailty, movement analyses based on kinematic markers during complex upper extremity-based manual tasks in frail elderly still pending. The main objective this study was to evaluate if task two different elderlies can be assessed an activity measurement acceleration sensor integrated into a smartwatch, further what degree parameters would independent. Methods data obtained from twenty-seven participants (mean age 81.6 ± 7.0 years) who performed tasks. Acceleration dominant hand collected using smartwatch. Participants were split up three groups, F (frail, n = 6), P (pre-frail, 13) R (robust, 8) according frailty screening. A variety measures calculated vector product reflecting activity, agility, smoothness, energy, intensity. Results Measures intensity revealed significant differences between groups (effect sizes combined over η 2 p 0.18 – 0.26). Smoothness particularly affected tea making task, while smoothness parameter related gardening task. Four nine good reliability both ( r 0.44 0.69). Multiple linear regression across showed that only variability magnitude peaks (agility) contributed prediction score (R 0.25). Conclusion results demonstrate smartwatch-based shows task-independent levels frailty. From pattern impaired preserved tested tasks, we concluded persons more physiological deficiencies, i.e., physical power endurance, than cognitive functioning or sensorimotor control.

This updated systematic review and meta-analysis further examined potential effects of aging on bimanual movements. Forty-seven qualified studies that compared motor performances between elderly younger adults were included in this meta-analysis. Moderator variable analyses additionally determined whether altered older different based the task types (i.e., symmetry vs. asymmetry complex) or outcome measures accuracy variability movement time). The random model 80 comparisons from 47 revealed significant negative overall indicating more impairments than adults. found showed deficits asymmetrical tasks symmetrical complex tasks, less accurate, variable, greater execution time These findings suggest rehabilitation programs for improving actions are necessary to focus functional recovery interlimb control including advanced as well coordination.

Wearable technologies are currently clinically used to assess energy expenditure in a variety of populations, e.g., persons with multiple sclerosis or frail elderly. This study examined age-related changes in unimanual and bimanual hand-grip force control capabilities by focusing on absolute relative outcome measures. Thirty-two older adults thirty-two younger performed isometric tasks across three hand conditions (unimanual dominant, non-dominant, bimanual) two submaximal targeted levels (10% 40% of maximal voluntary contraction). Force performances were evaluated calculating variables accuracy variability. Furthermore, to determine which experimental effectively indicate sensorimotor deficits, we conducted receiver operating characteristic curve analyses. Older demonstrated impaired at 10% contraction collapse the compared with adults, these deficits identified both Moreover, showed a good diagnostic quality contraction. These findings suggested that aging may induce lower level, motor impairments sensitively estimated quantifying measures reflect muscle weakness as measurements.
