Abstract BackgroundPresence of carbohydrates hampers protein degradation in anaerobic digesters. To understand this phenomenon, we used proteogenomics to identify the active protein-degraders presence low and high concentrations. Active metabolic pathways identified were investigated using proteomics with13C-protein substrates (protein stable isotope probing).ResultsAcinetobacterwas as main under both protein-fed protein-glucose mixture-fed conditions. The incorporation the13C-labelled substrate was predominantly observed outer membrane-bound proteins porin proteins, which are associated with proteinases or transportation amino acids across cell wall. Two-stage anaerobic digestion (AD) systems provide treatment for high strength wastewater with stability and performance. Encapsulation technology can intensify AD to facilitate the separation of solids retention time from hydraulic (HRT), offering lower HRTs, smaller reactors, effluent quality. To support successful deployment, however, encapsulated community must contain all needed microorganisms be flexible enough treat a variety wastewaters. Here, two-stage system was investigated in which microbial cultures were enriched on various high-strength wastewaters suspended flow-through determine how feed type influenced performance structure. The hypothesis that specific genera, or so-called "keystone species" would positively correlate organic carbon degradation given feed, enabling construction well-functioning encapsulation. Results showed number total bacteria (as 16S rRNA gene copies) did not soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) removal, indicating structure and/or members important good also strongly removal 1st-stage fermenting communities, but 2nd-stage methanogenic communities. Abstract Anaerobic digestion (AD) is one of the most preferred processes for treatment organic waste. However, additional such as co-digestion, pretreatment, and additive addition continue to be explored remove limits on applicability AD. This study investigated effects hydrophobic nanoporous silica aerogel (NpSA) synthesized from waste rice husks anaerobic co-digestion (AnCD) mixture consisting sewage sludge fruit processing industry wastes. All bioreactors containing NpSA-free, 0.1 g, 0.2 0.5 1 g NpSA (0.03–0.3 /gVS added ) were operated in a mesophilic-batch process. Este trabajo presenta la automatización de un reactor anaerobio utilizado para producción biogás a partir lodos residuales en el proceso extracción del aceite palma (POME). Anaerobic granulation from dispersed inoculum is recognized as a slow process. However, studies under saline conditions have shown that adding complex proteinaceous substrates can accelerate this To explore whether holds true also non-saline conditions, we conducted 262-days experiment with four lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors inoculated digested sewage sludge. Each reactor received synthetic feed containing varying amount of carbohydrate/protein substrate: glucose (RGlu), acetate/tryptone (RAc+Try), glucose/tryptone (RGlu+Try), and glucose/starch (RGlu+Sta). Development granules different influent composition was monitored macroscopy, analysis the extracellular polymeric substances, microbial diversity. Granulation faster in RGlu+Try RGlu+Sta. Increasing granule diameters positively correlated occurrence bacteria Muribaculaceae Lachnospiraceae families, suggesting their involvement de novo granulation. Granules had high relative abundances both fermenting (e.g. Lactococcus, Streptococcus, Trichococcus) involved oxidation volatile fatty acids (Smithella, Acetobacteroides). The results study provide basis for strategies to enhance rate practice when granular not available. Specifically, supplementing small amounts waste protein during start-up be effective.
