Abstract The crown-of-thorns starfish (CoTS), also known as Acanthaster spp., is responsible for a considerable amount of coral loss in the tropical Indo-Pacific region. After decimating populations through predation, it anticipated that CoTS will face food scarcity before recovery. It unclear how respond to starvation stress. Therefore, we conducted four-month stress experiment on CoTS, and analyzed response characteristics its stomach bacterial communities using high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing technology. results showed no significant differences α-diversity community, but β-diversity differed significantly between fed starved CoTS. community composition changed dramatically, manifesting mainly from Tenericutes Proteobacteria at phylum level, dominated by digestive bacteria (Mycoplasma) beneficial (Endozoicomonas) genus level. Furthermore, co-occurrence network analysis revealed reduced stability improved modularity, which may have contributed adaptation chronic starvation. This study has provided basis elucidating mechanism resistance contribute development new control measures adult starfish.

Hydrothermal springs (HTSs) are unique environments characterized by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater that often releases large amounts dissolved minerals. Despite interest in HTSs, microbial composition these sites remains largely under-explored, particularly concerning interactions between marine invertebrates and microorganisms. The shallow HTSs near west coast Sicily (Italy), with a constant temperature 31 °C throughout year, host two invertebrates: nudibranch Peltodoris atromaculata (P. atromaculata) sponge Petrosia ficiformis ficiformis). Using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) bacterial 16S rRNA gene marker, communities were analyzed. Microbial diversity was higher P. mantle than gut, notable differences families such as Caldilineaceae, Endozoicomonadaceae, Alteromonadaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, showing abundance variations among samples. Unique signatures, including Mycoplasmataceae, Alteromonadaceae gut Enterobacteriaceae atromaculata, also identified. These findings provide valuable insights into invertebrates, which recognized bioindicators environmental conditions.
