Nano/microplastics (N/MPs) induce phytotoxicity and represent a significant global threat to terrestrial agricultural ecosystems. However, the defense mechanisms of plants against different-sized N/MPs remain largely unknown. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated interactions between polystyrene (PS) NPs (50 100 nm) PS-MPs (200 500 with taro (Colocasia esculenta). We found that PS particles varying sizes exhibited differential root adsorption penetration, PS-NPs capable penetrating epidermis, whereas were totally excluded. Notably, demonstrated capacity recognize different responded degrees resistance. In reaction more toxic 50 nm PS-NPs, roots mobilized robust mechanism three levels: molecular, compositional, ultrastructural. This was achieved by activating lignin synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, lipid transport, resulting in doubling lignified region increases cell wall thickness 116%, 56.3%, 22.5% exodermis, cortex, respectively. Consequently, excluded all four outside vascular tissue prevented contamination corms. Our study provides new insights into interaction demonstrates crucial role barriers sustaining food safety.

The extensive use of polymeric materials has resulted in significant environmental pollution, prompting the need for a deeper understanding their degradation processes and impacts. This review provides comprehensive analysis environment impact on health experimental animals. It identifies common polymers, delineates pathways, describes resulting products under different conditions. covers physical, chemical, biological mechanisms, highlighting complex interplay factors influencing these processes. Furthermore, it examines implications products, using animals as proxies assessing potential risks to human health. By synthesizing current research, focuses studies related small organisms (primarily rodents invertebrates, supplemented by fish mollusks) explore effects polymer living underscores urgency developing implementing effective waste management strategies. These strategies are crucial mitigating adverse impacts degradation, thus promoting more sustainable interaction between activities natural environment.

Banana pseudo-stem, often considered as an underutilized plant part was explored a potential reinforced material to develop eco-friendly biofilm for food packaging applications. In this study, Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) extracted from banana pseudo-stem by alkali and acid hydrolysis treatment. The MCC used in different concentrated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix alone well both PVA Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) solvent casting method. synthesized powder characterized scanning electron microscope ensure its microcrystalline structure observe surface morphology. biofilms composed of MCC, PVA, CMC were assessed through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), mechanical properties, water content, solubility, swelling degree, moisture barrier property (Water Vapor Permeability - WVP), light (Light Transmission Transparency). FTIR analysis showed the rich bonding between materials biofilms. film incorporating combination CMC, (S6) exhibited highest tensile strength at 26.67 ± 0.152 MPa, making it particularly noteworthy applications packaging. incorporation increased strength. WVP content films observed low among MCC-induced which is parallel other findings. lowest 1% with (S4) (0.223 0.020 10−9 g/Pahm). S6 also considerably low. MCC-incorporated acted good UV barrier. Transmittance induced range on average 38% (S2), 36% 6% almost lower than control films. demonstrated capacity (1.42%) indicating significantly solubility film. formulated mixing ahead terms characteristics Also, outcomes study point out that can be great natural resource regard, proves excellent source waste utilization.

Abstract Microplastic (MP) pollution in terrestrial ecosystems is gaining attention, but there limited research on its effects leafy vegetables when combined with heavy metals. This study examines the impact of three MP types—polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polystyrene (PS)—at concentrations 0.02, 0.05, 0.1% w/w, along cadmium (Cd) biochar (B), germination, growth, nutrient absorption, metal uptake red amaranth ( Amaranthus tricolor L.). We found that different types did not negatively affect germination parameters like rate, relative vigor, speed. However, they increased phytotoxicity decreased stress tolerance compared to an untreated control (CK1). The presence MPs, particularly PS type, reduced phosphorus potassium while enhancing Cd uptake. For example, treatments 0.02 CdB, 0.05 0.1 CdB content A. seedlings by 158%, 126%, 44%, respectively, treatment (CK2). Additionally, contamination led plant height, leaf dry matter content, fresh weights, indicating adverse growth. Moreover, MPs bioconcentration factors translocation for Cd, suggesting might act as carriers absorption plants. On positive side, addition improved several root parameters, including length, volume, surface area, number tips potential benefits Our shows combination reduces growth increases risk food crops. Further needed understand how various species, which will aid developing targeted mitigation strategies exploring mechanisms through Finally, investigating application conjunction other amendments mitigating these could be key addressing agricultural systems.
