Abstract Winter cold extreme events have been observed to frequently take place over North America mainly its east side, which show significant interannual and decadal variability cause huge economic losses in the United States. However, it is unclear what leads interannual-decadal of winter extremes eastern America. In this study, we indicate that America, whose period shortened recent decades, tied Pacific oscillation (PDO), whereas their regulated by Victoria mode (VM). A positive PDO promotes lower latitudes owing presence American (PNA + ) patterns, a VM favorable for intense higher due occurrence negative (NPO − patterns. Thus, combine significantly contribute interannual-to-decadal through changes NPO PNA patterns variations meridional background potential vorticity gradient basic zonal winds. ABSTRACT On February 22, 2023, North America experienced an unusual weather phenomenon characterised by extreme cold in the west and warmth east, reflecting a surface air temperature (SAT) seesaw pattern that significantly impacted human activities region. Utilising reanalysis data, we analysed this case as well similar events long‐term climate records. The results indicate mode is caused hybrid evolution of atypical Pacific Oscillation (NPO) Pacific‐North American (PNA) phase relationships, transitioning from dominant positive NPO to strong negative PNA phase, while maintaining developing blocking, which refer transition atmospheric regimes. Further analysis revealed anomalously weak meridional potential vorticity gradient (PVy) southern Alaska prior event provided favourable conditions for northward movement intensification anticyclone central Pacific, serving key driving factor circulation PNA. Additionally, significant anomalous outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) tropical Indian Ocean indicated enhanced convective activity region, may have triggered Rossby waves, thereby influencing between mid high latitudes. Thus, PVy OLR serve precursor indicators such events.

ABSTRACT Winter warming in Europe is most apparent the northeastern parts. The minimum temperature increasing there at rate of 0.5°C–0.7°C per decade. main objective paper was to investigate changes characteristics cold days (CDs) and waves (CWs) Poland. Then, study relationships large‐scale circulation with regard CWs Due temperature, Poland characterised by a decreasing number CDs from November March 1978–2023. In recent years, have been significantly less severe are extended, whereas occur frequently shorter. Recent sea‐ice cover Arctic region entail mid high latitudes. 20th century, were mainly related blocking created over Scandinavia North Atlantic (Iceland). 21st some shifts centers action found, primarily associated strong Greenland Ural regions. These situations followed negative NAO/AO positive Blocking Index or Scandinavian (SCAND) pattern, which correlated winter (SCAND only February). It needs be emphasised that one important source areas air masses reach during CDs, this area faces greatest around globe.

Abstract. High surface ozone concentrations pose substantial health risks, yet understanding the factors influencing levels, especially role of large-scale circulations, remains incomplete. A key challenge is accurately modeling both circulations and concentrations. Using a high-resolution Earth system model (25 km atmospheric resolution), we explore how local meteorology affect levels. Our results show that heat waves can trigger increases in by stimulating biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions during summers 2015–2019. For example, maximum daily 8 h (MDA8) increase 12.0 ppbv southeastern US, 9.7 Europe, 17.6 North China, 9.0 central eastern China compared to non-heat-wave periods. In addition effects, blocking strongly influences downstream meteorological conditions formation. Focusing on pollution identify three major pathways Rossby wave propagation based locations: Euro-Atlantic sector, northern Russia, Pacific. These lead increased air temperature intensify downward solar radiation downstream. The impact most pronounced where MDA8 5.9 10.7 non-blocking periods, followed (2.1 4.9 ppbv). Blocking also stimulates BVOC emissions, enhancing 10.6 15.9 these regions. findings highlight critical circulation shaping regional quality, under warming climate.

In late November 2022, most regions in China were hit by a strong northwest-path cold wave, bringing high-hazard extreme low-temperature event (ELTE). Several parts of Northwest experienced extremely low temperatures and record-breaking snow depths. A stratosphere‒troposphere synergetic effect was suggested to be closely related the ELTE according diagnostic analysis. On one hand, concurrent establishment two blockings Europe–Northeast Atlantic North Pacific led polar vortex split at tropopause, Arctic Oscillation phase subsequently turned negative. An airflow with high potential vorticity (PV) squeezed out Arctic. Meanwhile, high-PV air that originated from lower stratospheric conveyed southwards western Siberian Plain along sloping isentropic surface. This condition triggered tropospheric response which East Asia trough deepened due intensified cyclonic circulation induced intrusion. other downward propagation anomalies accompanied displacement observed mid- November, respectively. Changes contributed enhanced over Europe‒Northeast stratosphere or upper troposphere. As result, inverted omega-shaped pattern formed middle troposphere, it consisted upstream downstream regions. The advected China, directly outbreak ELTE. double can efficient signals for cold-event prediction China. study provides novel insights into cause ELTEs under warming climates future.

Abstract The rare triple-dip 2020–2023 La Niña event has resulted in a series of extreme climate events across the globe. Here, we reveal role tropical Indo-Pacific oceanic interactions driving first twenty-first century. Specifically, found that eastern Indian Ocean subsurface warming anomalies were associated with re-intensification subsequent event. anomaly signals propagated eastward by equatorial and coastal Kelvin waves from to western Pacific through pathway, which contributes accumulation heat content deepens thermocline Pacific. westward Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) transported more during multi-year than single-year events, resulting injection warm water into Ocean. combination wave propagation increased ITF volume transport region acted prolong decay phase Niña, ultimately leading
