With the development of brain science research, artificial intelligence technologies such as brain-computer interface (BCI) have begun to be applied in medical field. People with advanced amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) lose voluntary control, including ability communicate. For ALS patients, BCI research focuses on communication. technology can used a communication tool. It records and extracts features signals translates these into commands that replaced, restored, enhanced, supplemented, or improved by central nervous system. Some BCIs been shown potential spillover for patients. However, there are still some challenges need addressed before clinically useful.

Background and Objectives: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a progressive, autosomal recessive, rare neuromuscular disorder caused by genetic defect in the SMN1 gene, where SMN2 gene cannot sufficiently compensate. Patients experience progressive predominantly proximal weakness atrophy. Oculomotor disorders are currently not regarded as typical feature of SMA. The aim this study was to determine whether oculomotor abnormalities present subjects with SMA assess potential relationship between parameters disease duration. Materials Methods: An analysis 15 patients type 2 3 age-matched healthy controls conducted. performance, including smooth pursuit velocity gain saccades (latency, velocity, accuracy) horizontal vertical directions, compared both groups. Results: participants revealed marginally significant reduction direction at frequency 0.2 Hz (p = 0.051), but no differences were observed any other or direction. saccade eye movements increased subjects, which statistically for amplitude ±10° 0.030), ±16.5° 0.107). latency, accuracy did differ significantly controls. None associated Conclusions: While certain abnormalities, such patients, these findings do indicate defining role impairment pathology its clinical characteristics.

Rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) is currently one of the most suitable paradigms for implementing a brain–computer interface based on event-related potentials (ERP-BCI) patients with limited ocular motility. This paradigm presents stimuli centered in user's field vision, which may hinder patient from attending to other elements screen. A potential solution this could be use semi-transparent stimuli, allowing both stimulus and background perceived. Therefore, objective study evaluate impact transparency ERP-BCI performance under RSVP paradigm. Five participants tested using three different transparencies alpha channels set 255 (C1), 85 (C2), 28 (C3). The results showed following average BCI classification accuracies: C1, 70%; C2, 74.67%; C3, 60.67%. Although analyses did not reveal significant differences, suggest that level should carefully manipulated maintain balance between performance, C2 even exhibiting highest accuracy among conditions. finding considered by future proposals aimed at users who need gaze-independent systems.

Objective: Saccadic Intrusions (SIs) are abnormal eye movements during gaze fixation. Studies have indicated the clinical relevance of SIs, especially square wave jerks (SWJ) in ALS. We used a software-based platform to extract SIs as part an interventional drug trial. The objective was examine SIs' change over time potential biomarker ALS disease progression. Methods: 28 patients (61.95 ± 8.6 years) were assessed with revised Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS-R) and oculometric test. Changes correlations ALSFRS-R its bulbar subscale calculated. A power calculation conducted understand practical implications results. Results: significant increase SWJ trial duration observed, frequency (mean rise 0.14 0.28, p < 0.01), amplitude (0.001 0.0016 degrees, 0.005), overall (0.13 0.25, %, their relative out all intrusions (0.18 0.32, 0.005). Negative found (R=-0.43, −0.41, −0.39 −0.47, respectively, 0.001). required sample size for observing 40% reduction aspects when using test (α = 0.05 β 0.8), be 150 per arm, compared 200 subscale. Conclusions: Evaluation saccadic fixation able detect progression time, correlated Eye can potentially serve trials reduce show effect therapies.
