Friction dampers are widely used due to their simple structure, remarkable energy dissipation capacity, and frequency independence. However, existing friction prone relaxing the preload force during long‐term service, which can lead cold bonding or solidification. To overcome this critical shortcoming, a novel non‐preload variable damper (NVFD) was firstly proposed. The construction of proposed NVFD is provided in detail. Furthermore, restoring model through amplification factors inertial mass derived based on principle NVFD. Then, pseudo‐static tests with various parameters were conducted. Finally, single‐degree‐of‐freedom (SDOF) structure employed compare effectiveness paper’s new conventional (FD) under earthquake levels. results show that characteristics avoided problems large preloads by traditional dampers; thus, had stable reliable performance, effectively adapt different hazard
