Loss and Grief in Parents of Children Hospitalized for Congenital Heart Disease

OBJECTIVE Nondeath losses and experiences of grief can impact mental health but are understudied among parents children with complex medical conditions. This study leverages online crowdsourcing, an approach that gathers diverse ideas by soliciting contributions from community, to characterize experienced congenital heart disease (CHD). METHODS Eighty CHD a prior history cardiac surgery hospitalization across 44 US hospitals responded open-ended questions on private social networking site as part larger study. Data were coded analyzed using hybrid inductive-deductive approach, themes regarding the ways loss identified. RESULTS Six identified: (1) identity was overarching theme cut other themes; (2) sense security/predictability; (3) “normal/healthy” pregnancy, birth, child; (4) work/financial loss; (5) parent-infant bonding parenting experiences; (6) of/impact relationships. To support families their nondeath losses, parent participants recommended care professionals acknowledge normalize grief, provide memory meaning-making opportunities, in establishing bond baby, facilitate participation inpatient care, offer general psychosocial support. CONCLUSIONS Acknowledging normalizing is paramount supporting CHD. A thorough understanding types necessary better promote healthy family child outcomes.
