ABSTRACT Physiological mechanisms underlie behavioural responses that have important implications for individual fitness. While personality variation is well established in reptiles, the underlying physiological are less understood. Studies on lizards yielded mixed results regarding relationships between traits and parameters, with syndromes, particularly connection physiology, remaining largely unexplored. We assessed relationship thermal Liolaemus multimaculatus , considering sex as an intervening factor. Exploration boldness were compared familiar novel substrates, we correlations preference locomotor performance. found no repeatability any of studied, contrast to performance which exhibited high repeatability. Our do not support occurrence a syndrome, correlation was exploration. Exploratory behaviour differed substrates sexes, females being more exploratory than males. More explorative individuals, females, enhanced at lower temperatures, revealing inverse within observed thermal‐behavioural type. Intersexual differences lizard can be attributed both ecological pressures mechanisms. Intraspecific syndromes increase species' niche, potentially favouring its adaptability environmental change. Previous studies independently explored pressures. However, comprehensive understanding how these interact influence outcomes remains elusive.

Temperature is a key factor mediating organismal fitness and has important consequences for species' ecology. While the mean effects of temperature on behaviour have been well-documented in ectotherms, how alters behavioural variation among within individuals, whether this differs between sexes, remains unclear. Such likely ecological evolutionary consequences, given that selection acts at individual level. We investigated effect individual-level metabolism adult male female Drosophila melanogaster (n = 129), by taking repeated measures locomotor activity metabolic rate both standard (25°C) high (28°C). Males were moderately more responsive their levels to change when compared females. However, was not true either or active rate, where no sex differences thermal plasticity found. Furthermore, higher temperatures increased among- within-individual male, but female, activity. Given can be critical population persistence, we suggest future studies test amount expressed response may result sex-specific vulnerabilities warming climate.

Individual consistency in behaviour, known as animal personality, and behavioural plasticity response to environmental changes are important factors shaping individual behaviour. Correlations between them, called personality-dependent plasticity, indicate that personality can affect reactions the environment. In farm animals this could impact management or stressors but has not yet been investigated. Here we use ultra-wideband location sensors measure movement of 90 dairy calves for up 56 days starting small pair-housing enclosures, subsequently moved larger social housings. For first time were shown differ when changing housing. There significant correlations distance travelled (0.57), meaning individuals furthest pair housing increased their more groups, residence (- 0.65) those stayed same area decreased with change housing, demonstrating plasticity. Additionally, conformed pen-mate's behaviour pairs, did continue groups. Therefore, effects how respond inform decisions.

Abstract Animal personalities are characterized by intra‐individual consistency and consistent inter‐individual variability in behaviour across time contexts. Personalities abound animals, ranging from sea anemones to insects, arachnids, birds, fish primates, yet the pathways mediating personality formation expression remain elusive. Social conditions during early postnatal period known determinants of mean behavioural trait expressions later life, but their relevance shaping trajectories is unknown. Here, we investigated consequences social isolation on adult plant‐inhabiting predatory mites Phytoseiulus persimilis . These adapted live groups. We hypothesized that transient experience is, deprivation any contact a sensitive window post‐hatching phase, has enduring adverse effects expression. Newly hatched were transiently reared or groups tested as adults for repeatability various within‐group behaviours, such movement patterns mutual interactions including sociability, defined propensity associate interact benignly with conspecifics, activity when alone. Groups composed individuals same different early‐life experiences repeatedly videotaped individual behaviours automatically analysed using AnimalTA. life had persistent traits well expression, measured intraclass correlation coefficients (indicating repeatability). On average, isolation‐reared females moved at higher speeds, meandered less, kept greater distances others fewer immediate neighbours than group‐reared females. Group‐reared highly repeatable distance, moving speed, meandering area explored, whereas only number neighbours. Activity, quantified proportion spent within groups, was females, activity, alone, isolation. Strikingly, also male mates influenced mated males boosting Overall, our study provides evidence phase critical lasting extend into adulthood, impairing should cascade upward, changing phenotypic composition diversity populations.

Abstract Personality traits drive individual differences in behaviour that are consistent across time and context. limits behavioural plasticity, which could lead to maladaptive choices if animals cannot adapt their behavior changing conditions. Here, we assessed consistency flexibility one personality trait, boldness, non-social social contexts eastern gartersnakes ( Thamnophis sirtalis ). Snakes explored a novel open arena either alone or pair. Pairs were assigned based on the data from solo trials, such each snake was paired once with bolder less bold partner. We predicted snakes would conform when context, displaying plasticity personality, causing boldness scores converge. found within (solo paired), but changed (from paired). Plasticity resulted an interaction between conformity repeatable plasticity. In line some other species, conformed more they reflects bias decision-making, our results highlight cognitive processes expression of flexible sensitive show both combine shape ways responsive competition. This pattern may be particularly beneficial for species group-living is seasonal.
