Storm Daniel initiated on 3 September 2023, over the Northeastern Aegean Sea, causing extreme rainfall levels for following four days, reaching an average of about 360 mm Peneus basin, in Thessaly, Central Greece. This event led to extensive floods, with 17 human lives lost and devastating environmental economic impacts. The automatic water-monitoring network HIMIOFoTS National Research Infrastructure captured evolution phenomenon relevant hydrometeorological (rainfall, water stage, discharge) measurements were used analyse event’s characteristics. results indicate that rainfall’s return period was up 150 years, peak flow close river mouth reached approximately 1950 m3/s, outflow volume sea 1670 hm3. analysis observed hydrographs across also provided useful lessons from flood-engineering perspective regarding key modelling assumptions role upstream retentions. Therefore, extending supporting operation infrastructure is crucial assist responsible authorities local communities reducing potential damages increasing socioeconomic resilience natural disasters, as well improve existing knowledge respect flood-simulation approaches.

ABSTRACT Floods cause significant damage in cities due to their intensity, frequency, and vulnerability, which are driven by complex internal external factors. Dynamic behavior of urban response during a flood event is difficult measure systems’ complexity non-linear behavior. This study simulates the dynamics people, inundated waters, financial expenditure visualize events using Colombo City, Sri Lanka, as case study. Sensitivity analysis was conducted for pumping infrastructure relief view variation Monte Carlo simulation. Results revealed that units initial budget significantly impact recovery areas. The results were validated water statistics hydrology models historical events. system framework useful combining multiple parameters modeling process understand relationships between population, inundation, programs. can be expanded quantify effects mitigation adaptation strategies flood-vulnerable optimize decision-making process.

Numerical modelling is a valuable and effective tool for predicting the dynamics of inundation caused by failure dam or dyke, thereby assisting in mapping areas potentially subject to flooding evaluating associated flood hazard. This paper systematically reviews literature studies adopting three-dimensional hydrodynamic models simulation large-scale dam-break on irregular real-world topography. Governing equations numerical methods are analysed, as well recent advances techniques, accuracy, computational efficiency. The case used model validation highlighted. advantages limitations compared with those commonly two-dimensional depth-averaged ones. review mainly aims at informing researchers modellers interested flow over topography developments so that they can better direct their future research. Practitioners find this an overview available codes (research, commercial, freeware, open-source) indications choosing most suitable method application interest.

Urbanization-led economic growth drives infrastructure investments and population accumulation in cities, hence exploiting natural resources at an extreme rate. In this context, coastal cities have become vulnerable to climate change-induced weather events human-made disasters recent history, where effective measures improve the resilience of are pivotal for developing sustainable living environments. This study proposes a framework assessing urban (floods) using bottom-up spatial interactions among natural, physical, social systems within regions. It is noted that seminal studies focus on either mitigation or adaptation strategies environments assess disaster resilience, limited multidisciplinary operational models hinder evaluations city scale. Therefore, system quantifiable parameters proposed essential policymakers management agencies timely allocation optimize recovery process. Moreover, planning can adopt mapping identify potential risk zones orient land use management. Urban be embodied with here, future scenarios tested multiple conditions.

Interest in flood risk prevention has been growing steadily recent years, with multi-criteria analysis frequently used to develop plans. One of the common factors included these analyses is annual rainfall. This study aims assess role rainfall identifying flood-prone areas, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) conduct research two stages. The first stage involved at-risk areas such as Topographic Wetness Index, Height Above Nearest Drainage, proximity watercourses, and drainage density. In second stage, results were integrated maps, applying consistent weights across both findings suggest that while a crucial factor assessment, its inclusion may inadvertently distort results. distortion occurs because distribution influenced by topography, making it only variable criterion among otherwise stable basin characteristics. As result, data shift focus from lower which are typically at greater but receive less rainfall, higher more Furthermore, argues not reliable basis for planning, fails accurately represent characteristics rain events – intensity, duration, frequency critical studies. highlights need appropriate criteria tailored specific area emphasizes importance developing new methods on impact rather than just distribution.

Increases in the magnitude and frequency of extreme flood events are among most impactful consequences climate change. Coastal areas can potentially be affected by interactions different drivers at interface terrestrial marine ecosystems. At same time, socio-economic processes population growth urbanization lead to increases local vulnerability extremes coastal areas. Within this context, research focusing on modelling mapping rapid-onset flooding is essential (a) support risk management, (b) design adaptation policies (c) increase resilience communities. This systematic literature review delineates state-of-the art flooding. It provides a comprehensive picture broad range methodologies utilised model highlights commonly identified issues, both from scientific standpoint terms policy implications translating outputs into actionable information. As maps represent fundamental instruments communication outcomes decision making resilience, focus spatial representation floods proposed adopted review.
