In this study, by merging mesoscopic damage mechanics, the probabilistic strength principle, and continuum visuals of columnar jointed basalts (CJBs) featuring various joint arrangement patterns are converted into inhomogeneous numerical models utilizing digital visual analysis based on image correlation (DIC)-enhanced rock failure process (RFPA). The strength–deformation traits, rupture features, energy progression trends CJBs subjected to direct tension indirect (Brazilian splitting) explored compared. acoustic emission (AE) buildup linked specimen’s peak stress is defined as micro-crack index (MCEI), impact multiple factors MCEI analyzed. A factor sensitivity conducted. study reveals that compared Brazilian splitting condition (BSC), under tensile (DTC), (TS) equivalent deformation modulus (EDM) specimens in directions I II (perpendicular column axis) higher. direction parallel axis, DTC, TS BSC lower at tilt angle β = 0°–60° higher 75°–90°. Under BSC, fracture occur joints columns within a localized area along longitudinal centerline specimen. Considering diverse influencing for 30° appears later stage exhibits magnitude BSC.
