Autism severity is currently defined and measured based exclusively on the levels of two core symptom domains: social-communication restricted or repetitive patterns behaviors interests. Autistic individuals, however, are often diagnosed with other medical, developmental, psychological co-occurring conditions. These additional challenges such as intellectual disability, limited expressive and/or receptive language, anxiety disorders, can have a tremendous impact day-to-day lives autistic for both their adaptive functioning well sense wellbeing. Furthermore, initial presentation symptoms likelihood changing over time influenced by presence In order to truly understand how person's autism impacts life, should be considered. This approach was recently taken byThe Lancet Commission future care clinical research in autism, which proposed term "profound autism" subgroup individuals presenting high severity, little no who require extensive long-term care. Considering individual factors daily living skills, specific support needs environmental resources would also enhance evaluation disability individuals. As employed assessment multidimensional could provide more comprehensive system classification impairment. At present, there formal way designate combined effect these different aspects life. A outlook that acknowledges impairments, capabilities, conditions, useful identifying subgroups determining strengths assessments.

ABSTRACT Assessing autistic traits alongside co‐occurring emotional/behavioral concerns (EBCs) is challenging due to their overlap in clinical presentations, which can vary by age and sex. This study aimed investigate domain‐specific associations between EBCs–including anxiety, affective, attention‐deficit/hyperactivity, oppositional‐defiant problems–across childhood boys girls. We prospectively followed 389 children (84% male) diagnosed with autism at ages 2–5 years, using the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) across eight timepoints until 12. Moderated nonlinear factor analysis was used identify adjust for measurement non‐invariance of SRS items age, sex, EBCs. The adjusted scores were then sex‐moderated time‐varying modeling Several domains social‐interaction difficulties repetitive mannerisms showed significant intercept bias level anxiety ADHD (effect size r > 0.20). In boys, strong observed social‐communication EBCs around 7–9, tended diminish late childhood. contrast, girls stable or intensifying associations, particularly into Results revealed after addressing item‐level biases. varying over time highlight importance continuous monitoring promptly address children's sex‐differential mental health needs. These findings emphasize benefits refining behavioral constructs adopting a nuanced developmental approach critical periods symptom coupling/decoupling informing evaluation service provision.

It is well-documented that children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) have a higher likelihood of experiencing anxiety, as well other socio-emotional and behavioural (SEB) difficulties. Despite this, there little consensus to how these difficulties manifest. This study aims understand the prevalence broader SEB informing intervention development by understanding relationships between them. A mixed-methods, case-control was conducted. First, an online survey completed 107 parents either DLD ("DLD sample"; n = 57) or typically developing ("typical 50), aged 6-12 years old. Binary statements informed previous qualitative work (e.g. "my child requires routine/sameness"; has frequent tantrums") provided insight into in both typical samples. Validated measures emotion regulation, intolerance uncertainty, insistence on sameness, family stress coping mechanisms were also collected. Correlation mediation analyses run using validated manifestation anxiety more detail. Qualitative interviews then carried out select panel respondents (n 4). The sample scored significantly all binary than sample: (80.7%, p < .05), requiring routine sameness (75.4%, .001) emotional dysregulation (75.4%; most common reported for DLD. Using scales, found only correlate group, not group. "Intolerance uncertainty" "insistence sameness" fully mediate relationship diagnosis symptoms anxiety. Age at autism diagnosis is associated with sex assigned birth (hereafter, “sex”), such that girls/women are more likely to be delayed or “missed” entirely in the diagnostic process compared boys/men. Later diagnosed individuals, especially girls/women, demonstrate increased anxious/depressive symptoms. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in social communication and interaction, restricted repetitive patterns of behavior, sensory processing abnormalities. Anxiety disorders commonly occur in autism. Existing studies implicate intolerance of uncertainty, alexithymia, sensory processing differences and emotion regulation difficulties as influencing factors anxiety To date, a few have considered the combination these within same sample. Autistic people are more likely to experience anxiety than their non-autistic peers. Understanding mechanisms underpinning in autism is a vital aspect of developing effective interventions. Intolerance uncertainty (IU) and restrictive/repetitive behaviours (RRBs) proposed contribute for autistic people.
