Abstract The rates of anxiety and depression increase across adolescence, many experience recurrence after treatment, yet longitudinal studies examining promotive factors are scarce. We prospectively examined the role structured style, personal social competencies, family functioning, resources in homotypic heterotypic continuity discontinuity three years a clinical sample. Participants were adolescents with or depressive disorders aged 13–18 at T1 ( N = 717, 44% initial participation rate) 16–21 T2 549, 80% follow-up rate). At T1, diagnoses collected from medical records participants responded to questionnaires. T2, semi-structured diagnostic interviews conducted. Higher levels all associated reduced probability later. not anxiety, whereas competence beliefs, competence, and, less strongly, functioning anxiety. Analyses interaction terms did indicate moderation by factors. Our findings suggest that bolstering may be vital for increasing treatment success preventing transition toward adulthood.

A rising prevalence of adolescent mental disorders in the Western world has been widely reported, raising concerns for development and well-being. Mental are known to negatively impact educational performance. Yet it remains uncertain whether relationship between outcomes also changed over time if change is more pronounced among high compared low performing students. Abstract Background Whether the recent rise in adolescent self-reported depressive symptoms is influenced by changing reporting behavior much debated. Most studies use observed sum scores to document trends but fail assess whether their measures are invariant across time, a prerequisite for meaningful inferences about change. We examined measurement noninvariance, indicative of perceptions and symptoms, may influence assessment time symptoms. Methods Data stem from nationwide repeated cross-sectional Ungdata-surveys (2010–2019) 560 712 responses adolescents aged 13 19 years. Depressive were measured with Kandel Davies' six-item Mood Inventory. Using structural equation modeling, we invariance gender age, estimated consequences noninvariance on cross-cohort trends. Results Across most conditions, instrument was found time. The few noninvariant parameters detected had negligible impact trend estimates. From 2014, latent mean symptom increased among girls. For boys, U shaped pattern detected, whereby an initial decrease followed increase 2016. Larger issues age girls between genders. Conclusions perspective, notion that changed has been important driver secular not supported. Thus, other causes these should be considered. However, (in girls) highlights necessarily perceived equivalently early late adolescence gender.
