Anatomical correlates of apathy and impulsivity co-occurrence in early Parkinson’s disease

Abstract
Background
Although
apathy
and
impulse
control
disorders
(ICDs)
are
considered
to
represent
opposite
extremes
of
a
continuum
motivated
behavior
(i.e.,
hypo-
hyperdopaminergic
behaviors),
they
may
also
co-occur
in
Parkinson’s
disease
(PD).
Objectives
We
aimed
explore
the
co-occurrence
ICDs
its
neural
correlates
analyzing
gray
matter
(GM)
changes
early
untreated
PD
patients.
Moreover,
we
investigate
possible
longitudinal
relationship
between
their
putative
impact
on
cognition
during
first
five
years
PD.
Methods
used
Progression
Markers
Initiative
(PPMI)
database
identify
423
drug-naïve
patients
at
baseline
5-year
follow-up.
Baseline
MRI
volumes
were
analyzed
groups
using
voxel-based
morphometry.
Multi-level
models
assessed
(across
years)
cognitive
functioning.
Results
At
baseline,
was
observed
23
(5.4%).
This
finding
related
anatomical
GM
reduction
along
cortical
regions
involved
limbic
circuit
systems.
Longitudinal
analyses
indicated
that
each
other
as
well
combined
use
levodopa
dopamine
agonists.
Worse
apathetic
states
associated
with
poorer
executive
functions.
Conclusions
Apathy
joint
non-exclusive
neuropsychiatric
stages
decrease

Abstract
Introduction
The
present
study
aimed
to
explore
the
suitability
of
vocabulary
knowledge
(VOC)
test
as
an
accurate
and
reliable
proxy
cognitive
reserve
(CR)
by
evaluating
its
psychometric
properties
discrimination
accuracy
compared
with
other
CR
measures
in
multiple
sclerosis
(MS).
Methods
Sixty-eight
consecutive
people
(pwMS),
followed
at
our
MS
outpatient
clinic,
completed
a
clinical
evaluation
neuropsychological
assessment
including:
VOC,
Brief
Repeatable
Battery
Neuropsychological
Tests
(BRB-N),
Cognitive
Reserve
Index
Questionnaire
(CRIq),
Beck
Depression
Inventory-II,
State-Trait
Anxiety
Inventory.
Reliability,
convergent
divergent
validity,
VOC
were
assessed
using
educational
level
reference
standard.
possible
effects
sociodemographic
factors
on
their
role
predicting
global
status
also
explored.
Results
demonstrated
good
internal
consistency
(Cronbach’s
α
=
0.894)
adequate
construct
validity.
It
showed
acceptable
between
pwMS
high
low
CR,
comparable
CRIq
score.
Education
strongly
affected
scores,
which
turn
independent
features.
