Addressing per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination is an urgent environmental concern. While most research has focused on PFAS in water matrices, comparatively little attention been given to sludge, a significant by-product of wastewater treatment. This critical review presents the latest information emission sources, global distribution, international regulations, analytical methods, and remediation technologies for sludge biosolids from treatment plants. concentrations matrices are typically hundreds ng/g dry weight (dw) developed countries but rarely reported developing least-developed due limited capability. In comparison samples, efficient extraction cleaning procedures crucial detection samples. regulations have mainly soil reuse, only two set limits or with maximum 100 dw major PFAS. Biological using microbes enzymes present considered as having high potential remediation, they eco-friendly, low-cost, promising. By contrast, physical/chemical methods either energy-intensive linked further challenges disposal. The findings this deepen our comprehension guided future recommendations.

Low and unstable digestion performance is a challenging issue for anaerobic digestion, which prompts researchers to develop new strategies. In addition traditional approaches such as co-digestion, pre-treatment, recirculation, some emerging strategies, namely additive processes microaeration, have also been recognized developed in recent years. Many studies evaluated the effect of these strategies on performance. However, their comprehensive analysis lacking, especially regarding mechanisms different This review presents overview research progress based latest research, considering five main listed above. Through critical thinking, summary mechanism, reactor performance, availability presented. The results demonstrate that contribution microaeration mainly balance composition activity hydrolysis, acidogenesis, methanogenic archaea. Recirculation co-digestion mass reaction environments. Pre-treatment, removing lignin, reducing cellulose crystallinity, increasing substrate-specific surface area, makes characteristics substrate more conducive microorganisms. mechanism varies greatly depending type additive, enhancing interspecies electron transfer through conductive materials, resisting adverse conditions functional microbial additives, accelerating nutrient absorption by regulating bioavailability trace elements. Although promoting ultimate allow parameters reach an ideal status then achieve among substance, microorganisms, water reactor.

Sludge, as a sustainable energy source and pollutant matrix, necessitates effective management. The environmental, economic impacts of sludge management practices in Australia remained unknown. Furthermore, lignosulfonate addition was recently reported promising approach to enhance the production from sludge, benefits which on have not been explored. Life cycle assessment four scenarios: two traditional (A: land application digested B: composting before application) innovative (A B with during digestion process - C D) conducted. Traditional scenario A outperformed B, 2.24-fold reduction environmental footprints, 16.28-fold higher recovery, reduced expenditure reaching $78.23/t dry (DS). Scenario demonstrated superior results 1.26-fold decrease 1.51-fold more recovery than A, shift $5.36/t DS. Sensitivity analysis revealed sensitive sludge's total volatile solids content, highlighting importance optimization for best performance. These findings guide environmentally economically viable management, emphasizing efficient recovery.

Climate change is driving global endeavours to achieve carbon neutrality and renewable energy expansion. Sludge, a nutrient-rich waste, holds potential yet poses environmental challenges that need proper management. We conducted comprehensive life cycle assessment evaluate the balance footprint of most commonly used sludge management scenarios in BRICS countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa. Technologies such as incineration anaerobic digestion with recovery units (i.e., cogeneration unit) maximize minimize footprint, showing superior performance. Shifting from worst best can boost production by 1.4-98.4 times cut 1.5-21.4 times. In 2050, these improvements could lead 98-fold generation 25-fold drop emissions, according Announced Pledges Scenarios. Optimizing parameters volatile solids efficiency further boosts output minimizes footprint. This study offers robust evidence support sustainable thus promote goals, guide technological transitions, inform policymaking for development.
