The primary objective of this study was to demonstrate the potential digital image analysis as a tool identify microplastic (MP) particles in surface waters and facilitate their characterisation terms 2D 3D morphology. Digital preceded by microscopic used for an exhaustive quantitative qualitative evaluation MPs isolated from Vistula river. Using processing procedures, shape descriptors were determined. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) interpret relationships between parameters studied, characterising MP particle geometry, type colour. This multivariate data allowed 3 or 4 main factors be extracted, explaining approximately 90% variation It found that first principal component granules, flakes films largely represented strongly correlated with (area, perimeter, equivalent area diameter) (CSF, Compactness, Dimensionality). Considering scraps, PC1 only five above descriptors, Compactness variable had largest contribution PC2. In addition, films, relationship colour could observed. For most numerous group identified multicoloured no such association found. results our can further regarding presence floating on river surface, particular focus secondary origin. is key importance optimising future efforts conducting small-scale multidimensional monitoring reducing plastics aquatic environment.
