The thermosensitive zwitterionic surfactant, 3-(n-nonyl-N,N-dimethylammonio) propyl sulfate (C9-APSO4), in solution displays a liquid-liquid miscibility gap exhibiting an upper critical temperature (UCST) contrast to the lower temperature, as is characteristic of nonionic surfactants. In this study, micellar and aggregational properties surfactant its homogeneous isotropic one phase region above UCST were examined using surface tension small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements. micelle concentration (CMC) C9-APSO4 was determined both H2O D2O at 40 70 °C well cloud point (CP) over range 0.07-0.70 M. CMC values 48-55 mM (40 °C) 61-65 (70 °C), respectively. SANS data analyzed core-shell model which represented by C-9 nonyl hydrophobic core polar [(N,N-dimethylammonio)-propylsulfate] headgroup shell. Results revealed that aggregates are spherical shape with diameter 2.56 nm shell thickness 2.28 (total 4.84 nm) aggregation number 30 ± 1 °C. indicated slightly larger size, i.e., 2.70 2.52 5.22 35. At fixed concentration, size decreased decrease from (as approaches CP two-phase regime). These results compared reported for other systems.
