We present the outcomes derived from controlled laboratory experiments on utilizing gravel rubber mixtures (GRM) as a geotechnical seismic isolation (GSI) stratum beneath foundational structure of EuroProteas prototype. The study encompassed three distinct GRM compositions characterized by varying proportions relative to total mixture weight (0%, 10%, and 30%) employed foundation soil. These GSI-structure systems were subjected external harmonic forces applied atop across broad spectrum frequencies force magnitudes. Preceding commencement field experiments, resonant column cyclic triaxial compression assessments conducted specimens featuring identical fractions mean grain size ratios. Our tests revealed that an increase in content resulted reduction shear modulus (G𝑜) augmentation damping ratio (D𝑜) while concurrently inducing more linear character G/G𝑜-log𝛾-D profiles. findings examinations align closely with those ascertained investigations. Specifically, it was confirmed GSI layer thickness 0.50 meters, composed incorporating 30% content, exhibited discernible overall stiffness system, accompanied corresponding alteration its fundamental vibrational frequency. enhanced within system manifested through observable reductions acceleration recordings diminished strain development at base encompassing wide range frequencies.

This paper provides new and useful insights into the performance efficiency of geotechnical seismic isolation (GSI) systems with gravel-rubber mixtures containing 10%, 25% 40% volumetric rubber content (VRC). Finite element numerical models were developed in OpenSees subjected to sinusoidal ground motions varying input base acceleration frequency. The best was attained for VRC = at a frequency 8 Hz. Using newly GSI index, energy dissipation found vary between good excellent, while that 10% is poor.

Base isolation is a low-damage seismic design strategy that can be used for constructing resilient structures. Geotechnical (GSI) new category of emerging base techniques has attracted global interest in the past decade. Research on GSI based rubber-soil mixtures (RSM) focused structural performance under earthquake actions, whilst there are concerns over serviceability limit states (SLS) requirements relation to (i) human comfort strong winds and (ii) ground settlement gravity, which may induce cracking durability issues This article presents first study buildings constructed with GSI-RSM system. The finite element model coupled soil-foundation-structure system been validated by data recorded from geotechnical centrifuge testing. numerical estimates have also compared analytical predictions. It concluded satisfactorily fulfill SLS requirements.

Soil-rubber mixtures underneath foundations are an eco-sustainable and low-cost Geotechnical Seismic Isolation (GSI) solution. Using rubber grains from end-of-life tyres in the can provide a modern recycling system that reduces stockpile of scrap worldwide. In recent years, gravel-rubber (GRMs) properties have been investigated, finding good behaviour static dynamic conditions. Laboratory tests on GRMs advantages as GSI form layer underlying foundation structure available literature. Nevertheless, only one experimental campaign full-scale prototype resting with 0% 30% content per weight was performed (SOFIA-SERA Research Programme). This paper presents 3D advanced nonlinear FEM analyses to reproduce furnish new results about above-mentioned test. The calibration parameters different constitutive models used for modelling soil supported by extensive geotechnical characterization. developed model validated test terms accelerations velocities. Then, studied, also considering shear strains versus stresses horizontal vertical displacements, quantities not investigated experimentally. Finally, axial displacements. highlights fundamental role both numerical modelling, invaluable tools coupled seismic soil-structure systems, including innovative materials, such GRMs, main using GSI.
