Geopolitical borderlands are politically sensitive areas and biodiversity hotspots, strictly controlled by the government military. How to ensure political security, while protecting in is a problem for ecologists governments. In this study, nest site selection of wild boar Sus scrofa was case study Sino-Russia borderland understand survival strategy life under anthropogenic pressure. We investigated (a) how spatial distribution pressure nests (b) border influence on boars’ selection. Compared with existing measures, we suggest different protection/wildlife management strategy, what need do may prohibit rather than perform other human interventions protect animals. Abstract Identification of highly biodiverse areas has become a crucial step in protecting species richness, especially considering the rapid collapse biodiversity and limited funds available to avert, far less reverse, these trends. Therefore, we aimed identify most important for conservation specified mammalian groups Southern Asia, region rich hotspots threatened by increasing rates habitat loss other anthropogenic activities. To achieve this, modelled occupancy ungulates small, medium large carnivorans at 20 study sites across identified richness. We analysed variation estimated space use between different ranked according their predicted importance conservation. Our results reveal significant positive correlation spatial utilization patterns competitive carnivores, yet no among carnivores prey species, suggesting that impacts are constraining coexist only few remaining suitable areas, superseding interactions guilds. Although rank site varied amongst groups, were able consensus on all considered. Most top-ranking located peninsular Thailand. argue that, assessed, represent refuges region, protection is critical maintenance Asia.

Abstract Cultural and natural values form the core of World Heritage designation. Properties displaying both values, however, comprise a fraction inscriptions (currently c. 3%) to List. In 1992, when that stood at 5%, adoption popular ‘cultural landscapes’ category cultural heritage in 1992 was therefore hailed as key development under 1972 Convention. This new designation provided, for first time, definitive bridge between humans environment, intended open door recognition underrepresented parties Convention, particularly Global South, pave way diverse range landscape‐based inscriptions. As important successful this has been three decades since its adoption, European sites North dominate >90% landscape recognise alone rather than mixed values. paper examines largely hidden role human–environment legacies tropical properties some most biologically endangered ecosystems on planet. Specifically, it highlights long‐term interaction people environments revealed through palaeo science, pre‐recent (>200 years) history, Indigenous traditional practices. Using exemplars internationally recognised being wholly outstanding universal value, argues limited reference evidence narratives potentially inhibits wider have played shaping ecological contemporary environments.
