Abstract Southeast Asia supports the greatest diversity of felids globally, but this is threatened by severe forest loss and degradation occurring in region. The response to disturbances appears differ depending on their ecology. For example, largely terrestrial nocturnal leopard cat ( Prionailurus bengalensis ) thrives near edges oil palm plantations where it hunts rodents (Muridae) at night, thereby avoiding human activity peaks. Conversely, we hypothesized that sympatric similar‐sized marbled Pardofelis marmorata would respond negatively relatively open as they are more arboreal than cats, rely tree connectivity for hunting, diurnal so have less potential temporally avoid humans. We used camera trapping from test habitat associations multiple spatial scales using zero‐inflated Poisson generalized linear mixed models hierarchical occupancy modeling. found cats were positively associated with large intact forests and, contrast plantations. Furthermore, preliminary evidence suggesting may adapt diel become crepuscular degraded forests, likely shifting These findings suggest cat's International Union Conservation Nature (IUCN) Red List conservation status should potentially be upgraded Near Threatened Vulnerable, matching other forest‐dependent posit our generalizable such semi‐arboreal could face greater threats relatives.

Abstract Identification of highly biodiverse areas has become a crucial step in protecting species richness, especially considering the rapid collapse biodiversity and limited funds available to avert, far less reverse, these trends. Therefore, we aimed identify most important for conservation specified mammalian groups Southern Asia, region rich hotspots threatened by increasing rates habitat loss other anthropogenic activities. To achieve this, modelled occupancy ungulates small, medium large carnivorans at 20 study sites across identified richness. We analysed variation estimated space use between different ranked according their predicted importance conservation. Our results reveal significant positive correlation spatial utilization patterns competitive carnivores, yet no among carnivores prey species, suggesting that impacts are constraining coexist only few remaining suitable areas, superseding interactions guilds. Abstract The leopard cat ( Prionailurus bengalensis ) is the most common wild felid in Southeast Asia, yet little known about factors that affect their population density and occupancy natural habitats. Although cats are highly adaptable reportedly can attain high densities human-modified habitats, it not clear which habitat optimal for species. Also, this has been preyed upon by large carnivores intra-guild effects of carnivore presence on almost unknown. To shed light these fundamental questions, we used data from camera trap surveys felids to determine three different forest types within Cambodia: continuous evergreen, mosaic dominated evergreen (hereafter mosaic), open dry deciduous forests DDF mosaic). We also conducted analyses evaluate interactions with carnivores: leopards Panthera pardus ), dholes Cuon alpinus domestic dogs Canis familiaris ). estimated (individuals/100 km 2 ± SE) was highest (27.83 7.68), followed (22.06 5.35) (13.53 3.23). The habitat plays a crucial role in ensuring the survival of wildlife. However, increasing disturbances caused by human activities present substantial threat to habitats, especially for species such as leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis), which is significant small predator. Currently, research on cats predominantly focuses low-altitude regions within its distribution range, leaving plateau areas understudied. To enhance our understanding impact we undertook study employing infrared camera trappings monitor cats' activity Xinlong southwestern China between 2015 and 2023. We analyzed spatial suitability utilizing ensemble models (ESDMs). Moreover, employed two-species occupancy investigate interaction disturbances. results indicated that (1) potential suitable area encompassed approximately 1324.93 km2 (14.3%), primarily located along banks Yalong river. (2) was influenced competitors, specifically yellow-throated marten (YTM), accounting 52.4% influence, well environmental factors distance water (DTW) at 12.0% terrain roughness index (TRI) 10.0%. Human interference, including cattle presence (4.6%), road (DTD, 4.9%), settlement (DTS, 3.5%), had limited distribution. (3) Within 5 km radius, increased with proximity settlements. (4) Leopard exhibited independence from humans domestic (species factor (SIF) = 1.00) while avoiding horses (SIF 0.76 ± 0.03). relatively minor could be attributed traditional cultural practices safeguarding wildlife cat's adaptability. recommend establishing novel conservation paradigm based living dynamics communities Xinlong, thereby offering more targeted approach biodiversity preservation future.

Abstract Information on the status and population estimates of species within a geographical area is vital for developing effective conservation plans. Camera traps have emerged as promising cost-effective tool, which numerous methods estimating density been reported. Comparative tests their applicability performance, other hand, are scarce. Camera-trapping line-transect surveys were conducted in Simbalbara Wildlife Sanctuary (SWLS) Churdhar (CWLS) to test different methods, i.e., spatially capture-recapture sampling (SECR), camera-trap distance (CTDS), line transect (LTDS), determining richness various mammalian fauna. recorded fifteen twelve mammals SWLS CWLS, respectively. In SWLS, sambar had highest ungulate with 5.0 5.3 individuals/km 2 estimated by LTDS method CTDS method, These two generated similar most species, indicating that both may be applicable mountainous habitats. The study discusses approaches identifiable unidentifiable individuals rugged terrain. Our findings suggest all tested can work well, each having its own strengths weaknesses.
