Abstract In recent years, so-called organizational accounts (OA) have emerged in theoretical biology as a powerful, viable strategy for naturalizing teleology and normativity. the wake of tradition autopoiesis biological autonomy, OA notably propose new meaning notion “organization,” which they claim to be capable, among other things, grounding objective observer-independent normative teleological ascriptions. this paper, I focus on last claim, asking “How are ‘organization’ ‘normativity’ conceptually connected?” The basic insight mobilized by framework answer question is most often expressed counterfactual argument regarding “conditions existence” organized entities. show that careful scrutiny core reveals substantial shortcoming. To make point, first analyze how positions idea via notions “dependence”, “constraint,” “closure.” Second, consider various possible interpretations norms. conclude implications do not enable deliver what promise, i.e., straightforward link between organization argue different needed capture intuition about normativitiy suggest stipulative route might better suitable end.

Abstract This chapter applies the framework from Part I to interdisciplinary explanation (IDE), continuing argument Chapter 4. first reprise social action framework, then apply it late-stage low-degree IDE (Section 5.1). Section 5.2 explicates three-layer structure of collective intention for this case. The result is a set coherence requirements IDE, analogous norms collaborating agents. titular bridge affords mutual relation between models contributed by different specializations. New elements comprising bridge, spanning near and far sides, reciprocally connect in opposite directions. 5.3 illustrates these with detailed example: array life science concerning hemoglobin. example extends bridging account more complex, realistic projects. 5.4 begins articulate epistemic significance models, task continued 6. 5.5 concludes summary results so far.

Abstract This case study illustrates the EP approach for an unsuccessful IDE: systems biology and cell reprogramming explanations of stem cells. Section 8.1 sketches social epistemic organization each community—systems (inherently interdisciplinary) (organized around key experiments). 8.2 examines explanatory model from community in more detail. Both are models; one mathematical, other grounded on experiments. 8.3 shows that IDE requirements a bridging connection between these models unsatisfied, two possible points contact. 8.4 diagnoses failure as due to specialized values both sides, field’s organization. These results show how biology’s style effective community-building undercuts this case, while has little incentive connect with despite general openness IDR connections. 8.5 concludes.

Abstract This chapter adapts insights from philosophical studies of scientific models and modeling into epistemic conditions for EP-explanations. Section 2.1 clarifies the sense “model” appropriate to author’s purposes, positioning this in relation existing philosophy science literature. 2.2 shows that meaning dovetails with explanatory particularist approach. The result is a thesis (EPM) interpreting EP terms models. 2.3 illustrates elaboration EP, its analytic inclusiveness, an extended case study: embryo stem cell research. complexity model–model relations diverse community. 2.4 builds on result, proposing general framework characterizing such relations. Later chapters put use. 2.5 concludes.

Abstract This case study illustrates the EP approach for successful IDE. The two scientific communities involved are immunology and epidemiology. I show that, late-stage work-in-progress models of COVID-19, coherence requirements bridging satisfied, while participants also tend to have associated pro-social attitudes. Section 7.1 describes each community’s social epistemic organization, using EP/EPM framework from Part I. 7.2 presents an explanatory model each: SARS-CoV-2 infection immune response, epidemiology guide COVID-19 vaccine distribution policy. 7.3 works through a relation between these models, arguing that all likely satisfied in this case. IDE yields insights interest philosophers, scientists, (potentially) general public (Section 7.4). 7.5 concludes, recapping method results study.

ABSTRACT Focusing on the recent work of Michael Bratman as emblematic several important developments in philosophy action, I raise four questions that engage with a set interlocking concerns about systemic functionalism action. These are: (i) Are individual and institutional intentions same kind thing? (ii) Can risk proliferation functional explanations be managed? (iii) Is there an appealing basis for apparent methodological individualism our theories action agency? (iv) Why not, instead, pursue methodologically anti‐individualist ecological approach to The latter alternative, suggest, offers promising way retain many core insights Bratmanian project while avoiding difficulties inherent some presumptions strands contemporary

Models of consciousness need to explain both objective correlates conscious experience as well its subjective structure.
