Social exclusion refers to the experience of being disregarded or rejected by others and has wide-ranging negative consequences for well-being cognition. Cyberball, a game where ball is virtually tossed between players, then leads research participant, common method used examine social exclusion. The neural correlates remain topic debate, particularly with regards role dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) concept pain. Here we conducted quantitative meta-analysis using activation likelihood estimation (ALE) identify brain activity reliably engaged during Cyberball task performance (Studies = 53; total N 1,817 participants). Results revealed consistent recruitment in ventral posterior cortex, inferior superior frontal gyri, insula, occipital pole. No reliable was observed dACC. Using probabilistic atlas define dACC, fewer than 15% studies reported peak coordinates Meta-analytic connectivity mapping suggests patterns co-activation are topography default network. Reverse inference cognition associated computed Neurosynth be cognitive terms Social, Autobiographical, Mental States, Theory Mind. Taken together, these findings highlight network warns against interpretations dACC as key region involved humans.

Cognitive and behavioural flexibility permit the appropriate adjustment of thoughts behaviours in response to changing environmental demands. Brain mechanisms enabling have been examined using non-invasive neuroimaging approaches humans alongside pharmacological lesion studies animals. This work has identified large-scale functional brain networks encompassing lateral orbital frontoparietal, midcingulo-insular frontostriatal regions that support across lifespan. Flexibility can be compromised early-life neurodevelopmental disorders, clinical conditions emerge during adolescence late-life dementias. We critically evaluate evidence for enhancement through cognitive training, physical activity bilingual experience. is critical optimal adaptation actions under circumstances. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) allows estimation of individual-specific cortical parcellations. We have previously developed a multi-session hierarchical Bayesian model (MS-HBM) for estimating high-quality network-level Here, we extend the to estimate areal-level While parcellations comprise spatially distributed networks spanning cortex, consensus is that parcels should be localized, is, not span multiple lobes. There disagreement about whether strictly contiguous or noncontiguous components; therefore, considered three MS-HBM variants these range possibilities. Individual-specific estimated using 10 min data generalized better than other approaches 150 out-of-sample rs-fMRI and task-fMRI from same individuals. connectivity derived also achieved best behavioral prediction performance. Among variants, exhibited resting-state homogeneity most uniform within-parcel task activation. In terms prediction, gradient-infused was numerically best, but differences among were statistically significant. Overall, results suggest MS-HBMs can capture behaviorally meaningful parcellation features beyond group-level Multi-resolution trained models are publicly available (https://github.com/ThomasYeoLab/CBIG/tree/master/stable_projects/brain_parcellation/Kong2022_ArealMSHBM).

Executive control is a complex high-level cognitive function that relies on distributed brain circuitry. We propose the anterior insular cortex plays an under-appreciated role in executive processes, acting as gatekeeper to other regions and networks by virtue of primacy action effective connectivity. The flexible functional profile subdivision renders it key hub within broader midcingulo-insular 'salience network', allowing orchestrate drive activity major including medial frontoparietal 'default mode network' lateral 'central network'. microanatomy large-scale connectivity positions play critical triaging integrating internal external multisensory stimuli service initiating higher-order functions. Multiple lines evidence scaffold novel hypothesis that, for integration lever network switching, insula serves control.

Analysis and interpretation of studies on cognitive affective dysregulation often draw upon the network paradigm, especially Triple Network Model, which consists default mode (DMN), frontoparietal (FPN), salience (SN). DMN activity is primarily dominant during leisure self-monitoring processes. The FPN peaks task involvement exertion. Meanwhile, SN serves as a dynamic “switch” between FPN, in line with demand. In domains, dysfunctions involving are connected to broad spectrum deficits maladaptive behavioral patterns variety clinical disorders, such depression, insomnia, narcissism, PTSD (in case hyperactivity), chronic pain, anxiety, high degrees neuroticism, schizophrenia, epilepsy, autism, neurodegenerative illnesses, bipolar disorder hypoactivity).
