Concerns have been raised that social media use causes mental health problems in adolescents, but findings are mixed, and effects typically small. The present inquiry is the first to measure diagnostically-defined symptoms of depression anxiety, examining whether changes behavior predict levels from age 10 16, vice versa. We differentiate between activity related one's own vs. others' content or pages (i.e., self-oriented: posting updates, photos vs other-oriented: liking, commenting). Excessive use of social media (SM) platforms and digital technology (DT), often driven by habitual scrolling due to adaptive feed experiences, has been linked anxiety, sleep disturbances, obsessive-compulsive behaviors while also exacerbating mental health concerns. Yet, the role "digital detox", defined as a voluntary reduction or temporary cessation device use, remains only partially understood both clinical lifestyle intervention.
