Abstract Fish otolith shape provides valuable insights into the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and ecological traits of fish species. This study aimed to assess compare phenotypic variation in among four labrid species ( Anampses femininus, Coris debueni, Pseudolabrus fuentesi Thalassoma lutescens ) inhabiting Rapa Nui (Easter Island) southeastern Pacific Ocean, utilizing geometric morphometrics aging methods. Age estimation based on structure indicated that collected specimens were adults, ranging between 1 3 years old. Allometric analysis revealed low but significant (5.40%), primarily driven by changes width, resulting distinct morphologies. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) sagittal otoliths elucidated morphospace species, with first two PCs explaining 60.3% total variance. PC1 distinguished elongated shapes (e.g., P. robust sagittae T. ), while PC2 correlated roundness, delineating variations within Canonical variate further highlighted differences shape, detected all The Discriminant function showed high levels discrimination accuracy for most species’ pairs. Except C. debueni-P. (89%) debueni-T. (96%), other pairs achieved 100% discrimination, highlighting reliability as a distinguishing characteristic studied Overall, our findings emphasize value characterizing offers potential applications such identifying prey digestive systems large or bird predators vicinity this isolated island South Ocean archaeofauna studies.

Accurate species identification of harvested fishes is a central, yet often overlooked, component fishery monitoring. This study examined the efficacy using otolith shape to differentiate between morphologically similar grenadiers Macrourus caml and M. whitsoni validate identifications by observers within adjacent Ross Sea region, Antarctica. Otolith information was collected from 610 329 otoliths research collections, where confidence in high, 2558 samples commercial longline catches. Univariate linear discriminant analyses research-collected revealed consistent differences two species, with being larger more elongate than those whitsoni. No significant effect collection depth or fishing season on evident for either no sampling location caml. varied slightly among regions, although extent these less species. To observer identifications, random forest (RF) model trained data 75% samples, validated remaining 25%, used predict observer-collected samples. The RF achieved high classification success individuals an Out-Of-Bag error rate 5.97% training dataset. Overall validation dataset 96.2%, 96.8% 94.8% correctly classified. Using this model, 90.6% 85.7% sampled were predicted as identified. Individual ranged 50.5% 98.2%. reliable predictable observed indicates that our approach can be applied ongoing archived collections confirm fishery-sourced improve accuracy fisheries monitoring, facilitate assignment previously material level, develop high-confidence datasets further biological analyses, understand prioritise needs. More broadly, results highlight potential effective tool assessing programs.

The identification of fish species using otolith shape has been common in many fields the marine science. Different analytical processes can be applied for morphological discrimination, but reviewing literature we have found conceptual and statistical limitations use indices wavelets (contour analysis), being specially worrying first case due to their widespread routine use. In present study, 42 were classified applying traditional machine learning classifiers performance measures (accuracy, Cohen’s kappa statistic, sensitivity, precision). Our results conclusive; a more adequate option classification than indices, independently considered. artificial neural network support vector provided highest values all wavelets. cases, sensitivity precision pointed out higher confusion between some patterns indices. Therefore, strongly discourage species.

Mesopelagic species are enjoining increasing attention due to the growing impact of fisheries activities on deep marine biocenosis. Improving knowledge base mesopelagic is required enhance their conservation gaps regarding many and families. In this context, otoliths can be fundamental assessing life history, ecomorphological adaptation environment stock composition. The present paper aims explore saccular utricular morphology intra-specific variability hatchetfish, Argyropelecus hemigymnus, from Strait Messina. Lapilli sagittae were collected 70 specimens separated into four size classes. Morphometric, shape SEM investigations performed describe morphology, contours, external structural organization, also studying intraspecific related sample sizes differences between otolith pairs. Results showed an different those reported in literature with fluctuating asymmetry lapilli belonging Class IV, a high all Data herein described confirm singularity population Messina, shaped by unique for oceanographic ecological features.

Abstract The garfish Belone belone represents the only valid endemic species for Mediterranean Sea and eastern Atlantic Ocean. It shows a wide global distribution range, with high commercial value ecological relevance in pelagic domain. Despite this, there needs to be more knowledge regarding otoliths of this species, total absence descriptions asterisci lapilli from populations lack studies on reliability shape analysis its sagittae. present paper aims provide first main contours description three pairs population, providing an accurate investigation morphology, morphometry, intra-specific variability sagittae, lapilli, . Results showed (i) directional bilateral asymmetry sexual pairs, (ii) different morphology morphometry than those described literature, (iii) enhanced between sagittae investigated size classes. All these data confirmed studied analysis, showing geographical size-related features probably related genetics, environmental conditions, life habits variations.
