Abstract The pursuit of novel food products with good nutritional value for both direct and indirect human consumption is crucial. Given the benefits insects sustainability this sort farming, using them as farmed animals a promising alternative. In regard, black soldier fly ( Hermetia illucens ) most capable efficiently converting wide variety organic materials, from waste to manure, into insect biomass generating closing nutrient loops they reduce pollution costs. Their larvae have 29% fat 42% crude protein, yet more saturated fats than insects. They don't concentrate hazards such mycotoxins or insecticides. Although rapid development expected, remain underutilized in animal feed industry mainly due technical, financial, regulatory barriers. social stigmas legal prohibitions against eating organisms that eat are added extant taboos facing consumption. Bridging knowledge gap crucial bring together stakeholders better understand opportunities challenges industry, so develop guidelines on producing an industrial scale facilitate wider use BSF feed, fertilizer.

The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) is attracting increasing interest for its ability to convert low-value substrates into highly nutritious feed. This study aimed at evaluating grape pomace from two varieties (Becuet - B; Moscato M) as rearing larvae (BSFL), focusing on the related effects larval growth performance, proximate composition, and fatty acid profile. A total of six replicates per treatment, 1 000 BSFL replica, were used. Larval development was assessed by weight, which recorded eight times during trial: day after beginning trial, then days 5, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27 (day in 30% reached prepupal stage). Production waste reduction efficiency parameters, namely rate, substrate index, calculated. analysed their composition profile; same analyses conducted (30 replica) that collected end trial 27). rate showed a higher value when reared B (4.4 3.2 mg/day M, respectively; P < 0.01). did not significantly affect BSFL. percentage lipids (TL) M-fed than ones. Total saturated (P 0.001) monounsaturated acids 0.05) BSFL, while an opposite trend observed branched-chain polyunsaturated 0.001). Interestingly, some conjugated linoleic (CLA) isomers [i.e., C18:2 c9t11(+t7c9+t8c10) t9t11] detected low amounts both (total CLA equal 0.085 0.16 g/100 g TL M substrate, respectively). Some (i.e., c9t11, t7c9, t10c12) also found reaching concentration 2.95 0.052 B-fed respectively. demonstrates winery by-products different can lipid biosynthesis potential opens newsworthy perspectives new valorisation produce full-fat meal oil enriched specific health-promoting interest.

Aquafeed production is a fast-growing industry, seeking novel, cost-efficient raw materials to diversify traditional ingredients like fish meal and oil. Insects, particularly BSF larvae, convert by-products waste into value-added biomass. In this study, co-products from two major fish-transforming industries in the Iberian Peninsula, i.e., tuna heads (THs) codfish frames (CFs), hydrolysates of THs CFs, TH oils, were supplied larvae improve their profile n-3 fatty acids (FAs), namely EPA DHA, protein/amino acid content. By testing replacement levels control diet with co-products, we evaluated amount FA that could be added larval tissues. The results showed high hydrolysed negatively impacted survival. addition, parameters such as moisture, protein content, viscosity substrate affected bioconversion rates. Nevertheless, fed these diets contained lysine (5.8–8.4%, dry weight (DW)), methionine (1.5–2.4%, DW), (14.4% DW: 6.7% DHA 7.1%). These findings suggest can effectively nutrient-rich biomass for aquafeeds, supporting diversification material sources promoting circular bioeconomy.

The use of black soldier fly (BSF) larvae and frass in agriculture can make an important contribution to food nutrition security. However, it is understand whether consumers are willing consume products resulting from the BSF as animal feed or fertilizer. This study employed stated preference approach produced using not currently available on market. Questionnaires were administered a total 4412 Ghana (1360), Mali (1603), Niger (1449). results show that vast majority respondents vegetables (88%) meat (87%) made larvae. A smaller percentage even pay USD 1.32 1.7 more if base price BSF-based 5 per kg. Age, gender, education, country positively influenced respondents’ willingness products. In contrast, neighborhood status, income, household size inversely related for these Our findings are, therefore, scaling up technologies region.
