Abstract Background: The fertilizer value of phosphorus (P) in waste products relies heavily on its availability to the subsequent crop. Aim: We studied link between extractable P and apparent recovery (APR, i.e ., difference plant uptake amended un‐amended soils divided by amount added) using spring barley grown three sandy soils. Methods: included sewage sludge, biomass ash, struvite, compost, meat bone meal, biochar from industrial sludge. Soft rock phosphate triple‐superphosphate (TSP) were for comparison. Availability was characterized extraction with water solutions sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, oxalic hydrochloric ammonium acetate, fluoride anion exchange resin membranes. TSP used establish mineral‐fertilizer‐equivalents (MFE). Water bicarbonate extractions also applied incubated soil before extraction. Results: APR ranged 26 31% 0 30% products. correlated most strongly P. correlation increased when Conclusions: conclude that is a good indicator potential availability. However, interactions properties modify

Abstract The contribution of phosphorus to water body eutrophication is a global environmental problem, and rapid increases in aquaculture are considered significant source discharged into the environment. current review focuses on waste measures decrease release Because diets fed systems, improving utilization efficiency dietary can reduce amount at source. A wide range removal recovery technologies has been identified, including adsorption, crystallization, enhanced biological (EBPR), denitrifying removal, heterotrophic nitrification aerobic denitrification (HAND) photosynthetic organism removal. Recovery were also reviewed, particularly sludge from recirculating systems. new method using bacteria immobilize nitrogen bioflocs proposed as better solution. However, most these have only implemented lab scale pilot scale. Further studies necessary determine working conditions capacities related commercial Moreover, methods must be selected based consideration recyclability.

Abstract While it remains debated if mineral deposits mined for phosphorus fertilizer are running out, insecurity is an emerging global issue. We explore how linked to the current linear economy (LPE) and historic implications. The problems multifold: there geopolitical concerns over held only by a few nations, sharply rising costs of fertilizers, heavy metal contaminants affecting soil food, problematic mining wastes, environmental degradation caused inefficiencies. Here we argue that new can resolve these problems. Transitioning sustainable use demands circular (CPE). A CPE supports several Sustainable Development Goals enables greater autonomy. illustrate with case studies outline opportunities change. will feature recovery facilities, waste valorisation technologies, improved formulations customized target crops crop systems. highlight examples rapidly advancing essential agriculture.

Recycling phosphorus (P) from waste streams like sewage sludge, animal manures or food industry by-products is required to sustain soil fertility without depleting non-renewable P resources. Several technologies are available for recovery, leading fertilizers differing in solubility and bioavailability. In this study, thirty obtained through different were tested assess if their fertilization efficiency was equivalent mineral soluble fertilizer applied as triple superphosphate (TSP). The main selection criteria (1) ensuring a wide chemical diversity, (2) choosing products already on the market at late stage of development, encompass representative current future recycled fertilizers. classified according organic carbon content neutral ammonium citrate (NAC), species each determined K-edge L2,3-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES). Three pot experiments with wheat, barley ryegrass conducted three growing substrates contrasting properties, all within pH range 5.8-6.9. Fertilizers containing magnesium phosphate, monoammonium monocalcium dicalcium phosphate type dominant showed similar TSP, while hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phytic acid iron phosphates had lower efficiencies. We conclude that trend towards high-efficiency, refined inorganic positive, lower-performing, mostly unrefined must be assessed light long-term supply potential additional benefits health owing matter other nutrients.

Use of nutrients recycled from societal waste streams in agriculture is part the circular economy, and line with organic farming principles. Nevertheless, diverse contaminants create doubts among farmers about potential risks for soil health. Here, we gather current knowledge on contaminant levels nutrient sources, discuss associated risks. For potentially toxic elements (PTEs), input zinc (Zn) copper (Cu) mineral feed supplements remains concern, while concentrations PTEs many have decreased substantially Europe. The same applies to contaminants, although new chemical groups such as flame retardants are emerging concern globally contamination differ strongly. Compared inorganic fertilizers, application fertilizers derived human or animal feces an increased risk environmental dissemination antibiotic resistance. depends quality which varies between geographical regions, but farmland sewage sludge appears be a safe practice shown by some studies (e.g. Sweden). Microplastic agricultural soils show wide spread our understanding its toxicity limited, hampering sound assessment. Methods assessing public health must include interactions multiple compounds. Evidence long-term field experiments suggests that may more resilient capable degrade stabilize pollutants than often assumed. In view need source expanding areas under farming, inputs originating conventional farms vs. non-agricultural (i.e. societal) inputs.
