Before collapsing, bay scallops (Argopecten irradians) supported commercial fisheries in Florida but, following decades of restoration efforts and management actions, still support a recreational fishery. Settlement was monitored along the west coast from 1992 through 2018, using collector traps. The primary environmental variables retained analyses included temperature, salinity, red tide concentration (Karenia brevis). settlement rate generally increased for first days trap deployment, then leveled off or declined. peaked when average water temperatures were between 21°C 23°C at four sites: St. Andrew Bay, Joseph West Coast, Pine Island Sound, indicative fall peak spawning. At Tampa Bay Sarasota sites, around 16°C, winter most highest occurred association with declines temperature 10°C–15°C during fall, smaller, secondary occurring similar increases spring. Warming may already be negatively affecting ability subpopulations to synchronously spawn, unknown impacts population dynamics. all declined rapidly salinity fell below 30 little 27, approached zero approximately 20. occurrence K. brevis exceeding 10,000 cells/L resulted reduced settlement. In core populations Coast Steinhatchee, uncommon, resumed blooms abated. For sites outside population, 2–4 y after tides. Recovery these noncore probably relies on exogenous supply larvae core. If that penetrate region, as observed 2021, become more severe, frequent, have longer durations, entire scallop could endangered.

When cyanobacterial phytoplankton form harmful blooms (HCBs), the toxins they produce threaten freshwater ecosystems. Hydrogen peroxide is often used to control HCBs, but it broadly toxic and dangerous handle. Previously, we demonstrated that glucose addition lake water could suppress abundance of cyanobacteria. In this study, was compared hydrogen for treatment communities. The six-week study conducted in large mesocosms facility at Grand Valley State University's Annis Water Resources Institute Michigan. To 1000 L Muskegon Lake water, added either 150 mg or 30 glucose/L. 3 mg/L two mesocosms. And were left untreated as controls. Triplicate 100 mL samples collected weekly from each mesocosm, which then filtered frozen -80 °C 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. sequencing results revealed quickly reduced relative cyanobacteria mesocosms, population returned over course 6-week study. On other hand, both concentrations caused a rapid proliferation multiple low proteobacterial bacteroidotal taxa resulting notable increases taxonomic richness duration reducing Although suppressed cyanobacteria, later near starting levels. apparently by promoting competitive heterotrophic bacteria.

Unprecedented catastrophic damage to coastal fisheries attributable harmful Karenia outbreaks were reported in Pacific shelf waters off the southern coast of Hokkaido from late summer autumn 2021. Hydrological and water quality datasets usually encompass a large number of characteristic variables, but not all these significantly influence analytical outcomes. Therefore, by wisely selecting feature variables with rich information content removing redundant features, it only can the analysis efficiency be improved, model complexity also simplified. This paper considers introducing granular-ball rough set algorithm for variable selection combining k-nearest neighbor method back propagation network to analyze hydrological data, thus promoting overall fused inspection. The results data show that proposed produces better compared using standalone regressor.

Phytoplankton composition and biomass were investigated in the C-43 Canal southwest Florida during a period of shifting discharges from water control structures. The canal receives regulated eutrophic Lake Okeechobee via S77 structure. During periods high discharge spring early summer, cyanobacteria dominated phytoplankton community, including blooms harmful algal bloom (HAB) species Raphidiopsis raciborskii, Limnothrix redekei Microcystis aeruginosa. low lake, mid-summer autumn, inputs to came primarily tributaries watershed surrounding C-43. decreased, but relative importance dinoflagellates increased, July. dinoflagellate community included Ceratium, Durinskia baltica, Glochidinium penardiforme, Gymnodinium fuscum, Parvodinium goslaviense, umbonatum/inconspicuum complex, Peridiniopsis quadridens, Woloszynskia reticulata, an unidentified thecate athecate species. D. baltica P. goslaviense recorded for first time Florida. Data was also obtained on temperature, conductivity, fluorescent dissolved organic matter, chlorophyll a, total nitrogen, inorganic phosphorus, PO

XX:XXX–XXX.In lakes, interactions between bed strongly influence availability transport nutrients. Okeechobee, South Florida, is eutrophic, shallow, polymictic lake that exhibits frequent mixing resuspension unconsolidated sediments. The objective this study was to evaluate temporal patterns characteristics linkage (TP) concentrations. Spatiotemporal generalized additive models identified key periods during which both surface suspended solids (TSS) TP increased, corresponding hurricane tropical storm activity. Our regions with persistently greater concentrations than average, indicating potential hot spots processes and/or internal loading. Sediment bulk density (BD) were inversely correlated, light, less dense sediments have concentrations, potentially contributing redistribution P. An integrated evaluation using model revealed influences explaining area concentration ≤500 mg/kg increasing while low decreasing, marking improvement conditions. If trend persists, it indicates increasingly storing P can resist entrainment, significant implications for assessing trajectory restoration.

Blooms of the harmful algae species Karenia brevis are frequent off southwest coast Florida despite having relatively slow growth rates. The regional frequency these algal blooms led to examination dominant estuarine outflows for effects on both K. and phytoplankton community in general. There is comparatively little information rates non-Karenia taxonomic groups other than diatoms. A seasonally based series (Fall, Winter, Spring) bioassay experiments were conducted determine nutrient response coastal community. Treatments included waters (Tampa Bay, Charlotte Harbor, Caloosahatchee River) applied a 1:25 dilution added water mimic influence environment. Other treatments 5-15 μM additions nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), silica (Si) species, amino acids, N (urea) + P water. Incubations under ambient conditions with shading 48 h. Analyses dissolved particulate nutrients coupled HPLC analysis characteristic photopigments assignments biomass via CHEMTAX. community, dominated by diatoms, cyanophytes prasinophytes, was significantly different season, indicating seasonal fidelity composition. Specific chlorophyll indicated no significant difference between any controls, treatment, P, or Si treatments. Conditions uniformly N-limited highest diatom biomass. Despite differing initial communities, however, there reproducible changes due persistent decline various taxa, including haptophytes, cyanophytes, cryptophytes. For one which present, relative diatoms mixed evident, that identifying behavior taxa critical simulation competition successful prediction region's blooms.

Abstract Impermeable infrastructure such as traffic causeways can reduce the natural hydrodynamic flushing of an estuary, resulting in reduced water quality and increased incidence harmful algal blooms (HABs).
