The use of different marine biomass materials as biofertilisers has been recognised since the beginning human civilisation – particularly seaweeds in agriculture. production (or components biofertilizers) from seaweed or other alternative is currently high interest given global desire to move away unsustainable synthetic fertiliser products. A more circular approach that brings together blue-green economies also consistent with UN Sustainable Development Goals promote “responsible consumption and production” patterns. overuse current (NPK) fertilisers within intensive agriculture now leading shortages depleting stocks critical resources like mined rock phosphate. This chapter explores past present research, commercial application, future perspectives using micro/macro algae, cyanobacteria, (i.e., crustacean shell waste biomass) help displace our reliance on traditional fertilisers. Such may be used raw form following certain treatment processes pyrolysis, functionalisation, nutrient enrichment, extraction bioactives) before their application soil. Additionally, unknowns potential risks for both environmental health.

The overuse of chemical-based agricultural inputs has led to the degradation soil with associated adverse effects on attributes and microbial population. This scenario leads poor health is reportedly rise globally. Additionally, chemical fertilizers pose serious risks ecosystem human health. In this study, foliar sprays biostimulant (AgroGain/LBS6) prepared from cultivated, tropical red seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii increased phenotypic growth Zea mays in terms greater leaf area, total plant height, shoot fresh dry weights. addition, LBS6 improved accumulation chlorophyll a b, carotenoids, soluble sugars, amino acids, flavonoids, phenolics treated plants. applications also bacterial fungal count rhizospheric soil. V3-V4 region 16S rRNA gene metagenome was analyzed study abundance communities which were rhizosphere LBS6-treated Treatments found enrich beneficial bacteria, i.e., Proteobacteria, especially classes Alphaproteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteriota, Verrucomicrobiota, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteriota several other phyla related promotion. A metagenomic those samples LBS6-sprayed plants correlated functional potential microbiota. Enrichment metabolisms such as nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorous, defense, acid, co-factors, vitamins observed soils grown These results further confirmed by significant increase activity enzymes urease, acid phosphatase, FDAse, dehydrogenase, catalase, biological index fertility corn plant. findings conclude that application Z. improves recruits microbes alters ecology sustainable manner.

The rising costs of synthetic fertilizers highlight the need for eco-friendly alternatives to enhance essential oil production in aromatic plants. This study evaluated effects red algae seaweed extract [Solieria chordalis (C. Agardh) J. Agardh] on holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum L.) Western Himalayas, by using five concentrations (0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0 mL/L) two application methods (drenching foliar spray) a factorial randomized block design analysing data at 5% significance level. Seaweed significantly improved growth yield, with highest content biomass. By examining various techniques, seeks determine best practices maximizing production. Application S. 7.5 mL/L, increased 71.4% biomass 63.4% compared control. also resulted 50% higher than drenching. mL/L enhanced components like eugenol, methyl cinnamate 61.5%, 17.6% and, 48.4%, respectively, Based results present study, is recommended optimizing growth, composition. encourages utilization bio-stimulants, enhancing sustainability, resilience agriculture.

ABSTRACT Seaweeds, like all primary producers, require macronutrients (C, N, P) for the synthesis of organic molecules through photosynthesis to support growth and accumulation storage compounds, including cell wall polysaccharides, example, agar, carrageenan, alginates, that have numerous industrial applications. The commercial production tropical eucheumatoids has been reliant on natural streams inorganic nutrients. Recently, prevalent use fertilizer in seaweed farming southern Philippines was allegedly initiated boost health avert crop failure due pests diseases; however, it may also be economically driven increase biomass with a shorter period is vital livelihood marginalized coastal inhabitants. Consequently, harvest fast‐growing but immature crops whose tissues are replete nutrients could compromise carrageenan yield rheology, and, more importantly, its status. Moreover, indiscriminate disposal algoculture pose potential ecological disaster.
