Parenting pathways to friendship: how Self-Control and emotion management skills mediate preschoolers’ social lives in China?

Parenting styles have been identified as significant factors influencing children's social behaviors, particularly in their peer interactions. However, the specific mechanisms through which different parenting affect these among children aged 3-6, remain understudied. Applying theoretical frameworks of SLT and SRT, this study aimed to explore how authoritarian authoritative interactions 3- 6-year-old children, focusing on mediating role self-control emotion management skills. A survey was conducted using a stratified cluster random sampling method, with 2,397 participants recruited from 16 kindergartens 10 provinces 7 regions across country. The employed descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, structural equation modeling, bootstrap method examine relationships between styles, self-control, skills, Authoritarian style is negatively strongly correlated ( β = -0.57, p > 0.05); fully mediated relationship, accounting for 32.79%, skills partially 16.39%. Authoritative had direct effect 0.07, < 26.47% 35.29% total effect; individual (stable psychological traits) (dynamic processes) are important bridges family practices influence socialization process also essential internal resources achieving positive adjustment. This contributes existing literature by providing empirical evidence differing effects interactions, while highlighting crucial roles relationships. findings offer practical implications parents educators Chinese families, suggesting effective strategies that promote development young children.
