Bioactivity and biomedical applications of pomegranate peel extract: a comprehensive review

Pomegranate
peel
is
a
by-product
generated
during
the
processing
of
pomegranate
(
Punica
granatum
L.)
fruit,
accounting
for
approximately
50%
total
mass
fruit.
Although
usually
regarded
as
waste,
it
rich
in
various
bioactive
metabolites
such
polyphenols,
tannins,
and
flavonoids,
demonstrating
significant
medicinal
nutritional
value.
In
recent
years,
extract
(PPE)
has
shown
broad
application
prospects
biomedical
field
due
to
its
multiple
effects,
including
antioxidant,
anti-inflammatory,
antibacterial,
anti-apoptotic
properties,
promotion
cell
regeneration.
This
review
consolidates
major
PPE
explores
applications
materials,
nanodrug
carriers,
hydrogels,
tissue
engineering
scaffolds.
By
synthesizing
existing
literature,
we
delve
into
potential
value
biomedicine,
challenges
currently
encountered,
future
directions
research.
The
aim
this
provide
scientific
basis
optimizing
utilization
facilitate
broader
field.

Abstract
This
study
evaluated
the
thermal
oxidation
stability
of
unrefined
walnut
oil
(
Juglans
regia
L.)
by
using
methanol
extracts
from
oven-dried
PE,
GE
)
and
lyophilised
PL,
GL
pomegranate
peel
Punica
granatum
L.),
oil-free
green
coffee
beans
Coffea
arabica
),
their
combinations
over
18
days
at
60
°C.
Extracts’s
antioxidant
effects
were
compared
with
those
gallic
acid,
alpha-tocopherol,
butylated
hydroxytoluene,
a
control
group.
Anthocyanin
(55.11
mg/100
g),
phenolics,
DPPH
radical
scavenging
activity
(84.06
%),
Trolox
equivalent
capacity
(761.60
μg
TE
/mg)
highest
in
PL
,
while
ferric
ion
reducing
(447.43
ABTS
(341.85
μmol
/g)
PL-GL
formulation.
ANOVA
results
indicated
that
antioxidants,
storage
times
interaction
significantly
influenced
oil’s
quality
properties
