Abstract Meropelagic octopuses hatch as planktonic paralarvae, being the subject of progressive morphological and behavioural changes ending with settlement on seafloor juveniles. The comparative study digestive systems can help to understand adaptation particular niches during this challenging plankton-benthos transition. Here, morphometric development system common octopus ( Octopus vulgaris ) is described through 3D microscopy techniques over first two months life. This compared those adults holobenthic cuttlefish Sepia officinalis , well holopelagic squids Loligo Illex coindetii . Based present published results, we suggest four stages for early O. : (1) post embryonic, (2) paralarval, (3) advanced paralarval (4) juvenile. was variable time, faster growth days life after settlement. All paralarvae-bearing species showed very proportionally enlarged posterior salivary glands at hatching both more developed conspecifics hatchling. could reflect a potential feeding mechanism external digestion probably compensatory an gland underperformance. smallest has been found in L. mainly because their remarkably smaller glands. major organs between hatchlings phases, indicating how different ecological contexts ontogeny are reflected structures.
