Because of hyper complexity, difficulty to define, multiple stakeholders with conflicting perspectives, and lack clear-cut solutions, wicked problems necessitate innovative adaptive strategies. Operations Research has been a valuable tool for managers make informed decisions years. However, as we face increasingly complex messy problems, it become apparent that relying solely on either hard or soft OR approaches is no longer sufficient. We need explore more methodologies address these effectively. This study bridged the research gap by proposing structured process encompassing subdivision-based problem structuring method defining problem, multi-attribute decision-making (MADM) prioritizing sub-problems, technique, data envelopment analysis (DEA) tackling one most critical sub-divisions. The proposed methodology, implemented in case study, focuses higher education institution experiencing decline student admissions involves five steps. First, diverse group formed ensure comprehensive consideration perspectives. Second, defined, considering long-term consequences, stakeholders, qualitative stakeholder opinions. Purpose This paper aims to examine the current level of application problem structuring methods, a distinct domain within wider analytical decision-support discipline operational research (OR), in dealing with complex situations organisations and societies. Design/methodology/approach The has reviewed relevant literature on methods by analysing articles practical applications that have been published discipline-based journals over past 15 years. aim was identify extent which OR practitioners use particular tools way this is done interventions. Findings results show main maintained their popularity are frequently used as approaches facilitated modelling environment. At same time, new proposed, these typically integrated multi-methodological frameworks often include more traditional techniques. On other hand, even though now quite well-established Europe parts world, they do not seem enjoy acceptance or recognition USA. Originality/value provides an up-to-date account means handling increased complexity highlights contribution important field work can make problems challenges world faces turbulent

Identifying research gaps and priorities is paramount to advance sustainability science contribute a sustainable future. This editorial contributes this effort by contemplating the agenda aligning it with recent changes in global dynamics. Drawing on consultations board members of Sustainability Science journal review relevant literature, we identified 12 key topics. These topics are interpreted within strategic framework encompassing three themes: (1) goals that drive science, (2) approaches attain these goals, (3) tools research. In so doing, emphasizes development extending beyond 2030, fostering equity justice, tackling issues related power dynamics geopolitical conflicts. It underscores significance attaining particular, theorizing, co-production knowledge action, clarity conceptual descriptions, developing systems-oriented analytical frameworks. Additionally, highlights value place-based approaches, learning from significant systemic shocks, nurturing inner transformations. also underlines need explore emerging technologies data-intensive methodologies as tool address concerns. The systematic contemplation presented piece aims invoke further discussion among researchers practitioners about fresh promotes integration nature society.
