Sustainability urgently needs to be achieved in urban green infrastructure. Maintaining and restoring biodiversity are critical for developing an ecosystem more resilient abiotic biotic stresses. The of spaces is vital as it reduces the risks associated with climate change (diseases pests), improves resilience ecosystem, enhances citizens’ well-being. Urban areas can provide important services necessary achieving prosperity, well-being, One Health paradigm at various scales. serve corridors stepping stones between rural environments surrounding cities, increasing their connections reducing risk ecological traps. conservation restoration strategies increase services. In this context, review aims analyze possible contribution ornamental plants biodiversity, investigating available knowledge gaps that need filled. Plants chosen esthetic functions often allogamous species, characterized by showy flowers attract fauna pollination, thus helping insects other survive. The loss of biodiversity in urban residential areas that are densifying response to increasing housing demand has serious implications for ecosystem functioning and human wellbeing. There is an urgent need integrating biodiversity-sensitive design into planning development. While several existing “Green Factor” tools guide greening strategies cities, none have as their primary focus. We describe here a tool specifically evaluates developments, with particular emphasis on supporting native biodiversity. NZBF-R (New Zealand Biodiversity Factor—Residential) also educates users through embedded explanations how various features positively impact it provides tailored recommendations effective enhancement, enabling professionals make informed landscape decisions. Developed literature review, analyses Green Factor tools, robust weighting process, the identifies ranks characteristics support biodiversity, based evidence from scientific literature. demonstrate application one case study. can be applied across planning, design, retrofitting stages projects, making valuable resource planners designers.

Abstract Urbanization is accelerating rapidly, highlighting the critical role of aligning with sustainable development goals, urban green and blue spaces (UGS UBS). These play a crucial in enhancing health well-being city residents terms ecology. Acknowledging importance ecology, this study utilizes Sentinel-2A data support vector machine classification, aimed to identify UGS UBS. To examine connections between UBS, specific indices, spectral bands, textures were calculated. Additionally, concentration chlorophyll, vital indicator ecological health, was assessed using three indices. Structural equation modeling employed elucidate relationship UBS their impact on chlorophyll for years 2017 2023. In model, exhibited positive path coefficient (0.25) chlorophyll-a, indicating that an increase associated levels. Conversely, 2023, turned negative (− 0.83), presenting stark contrast model. This shift suggests potential environmental or changes, such as alterations quality type spaces, potentially including more non-native ornamental plants contribute less overall can be subjected pollution, soil compaction, other stressors reduce plant health. Similarly, showed its from − 0.99 1.8 suggesting improvements cleaner water planning strategies at reducing pollution. The consistent across both bodies are not contributing Chl levels due complex interactions surroundings. Climate change is reshaping urban environments, intensifying the need for resilient green space design and management that supports biodiversity, improves ecosystem services, adapts to changing conditions. Understanding trade-offs between native non-native species selection important developing climate-resilient spaces. This review examines public preferences versus plant their implications management. We critically analyse services biodiversity benefits provided by both plants in spaces, highlighting complex involved. Our findings indicate while can be underrepresented landscapes, they offer significant ecological including support local wildlife pollinators. Some studies have highlighted climate resilience of plants; however, are likely more affected change. Therefore, conservation strategies needed, especially endemic threatened species. Seed propagation is the primary means of reproducing many native and endemic species, including garberia [Garberia heterophylla (W. Bartram) Merrill & F. Harper]. This attractive pollinator plant, to Florida, scarcely found in nursery production largely unknown gardening community. To better understand seed biology garberia, a series experiments were conducted evaluate effects population on viability germination response four seasonal temperatures, as well time storability. Initial was 49% 60% for Central North Florida populations, respectively. Seeds germinated readily, indicating non-dormancy, with significant temperature observed. Overall, day 28, greater proportion observed from seeds collected than across except winter (11/22 °C), where responses similar. The greatest at 15/27 °C (fall) 19/29 (spring), whereas 11/22 (winter), steepest decline summer temperatures (24/33 °C). Further, it that are intolerant long-term storage, losing early 3 months under conventional cold or room storage decreasing substantially more after 6 months. These findings contribute overall understanding underutilized species such key development efficient reliable systems our industry.
