In arid and semiarid regions, agricultural producers, including cashew growers, grapple with the challenges of cultivating crops in harsh environmental conditions. To address this issue, conditioning materials capable maintaining soil moisture levels even during droughts presents a promising solution. Herein, we synthesized superabsorbent hydrogel composite comprised starch-grafted-poly(sodium acrylate) embedded 20% (w/w) kaolin (KAO), designed to enhance quality seedlings. Characterization through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses confirmed its successful synthesis. The incorporation KAO influenced thermal, morphological, swelling properties composite, as result interaction between clay starch. Moreover, exhibited improved water absorption capacity kinetics, demonstrating behavior. Our findings demonstrated that addition just 1% effectively enhanced retention. Notably, placement within column proved critical extending interval irrigation cycles. Field experiments revealed seedlings cultivated conditioned positioned deeper pot notable improvements morphological parameters such plant height, stem diameter, leaf count, especially over prolonged cultivation periods. Besides, these displayed increased vigor overall quality, essential for establishment robust healthy orchards. Overall, study underscores potential cost-effective material enhancing cashews other crop yields regions limited availability.
