Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics have gained significant attention as emerging environmental pollutants due to their widespread presence potential health risks. In recent years, these contaminants been frequently detected in drinking water various beverages, prompting concern about sources effects. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the occurrence MPs beverages exposure assessments. MP concentrations vary significantly across countries regions, influenced by diverse factors such efficiency treatment plants, level pollution sources, condition transportation pipelines. Another critical aspect discussed this is assessment human MPs. Similarly, daily intake shows variation different regions. Beyond concentration water, an equally important factor quantity consumed, which can differ much two orders magnitude between studies. These variations consumption are key focus article, they greatly influence estimation exposure. Furthermore, it discusses limitations current research, emphasizes gaps understanding nanoplastics, outlines future research directions.

Abstract Microplastics (MPs) have become a major global environmental problem due to their accelerated distribution throughout different environments. Their widespread presence is potential threat the ecosystems because they alter natural interaction among constituent elements. MPs are considered as emergent pollutants huge amount existing in environment and by toxic effects can cause living beings. The removal of from water bodies wastewaters control strategy that needs be implemented present on strictly constantly near future mitigate into other work shows detailed comparison current technologies for remediation pollution. The rampant use of plastics, with the potential to degrade into insidious microplastics (MPs), poses a significant threat by contaminating aquatic environments. In present study, we delved analysis effluents from textile industries, recognized major source MPs contamination. Data were further discussed and compared municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent. All effluent samples collected at final stage in their respective WWTP. Laser diffraction spectroscopy was used evaluate MP dimensions, while optical fluorescence microscopies for morphology identification predominant plastic types, respectively. Electrophoresis employed unravel prevalence negative surface charge on these microparticles. revealed that polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polyamide dominant compounds effluents, PET being WWTP effluents. Surprisingly, despite exhibiting higher efficiency removal (ca. 71% ca. 55% industries), it contributed more overall pollution. A novel bio-based flocculant, cationic cellulose derivative derived wood wastes, developed as proof-of-concept flocculation. derivatives found efficiently flocculate MPs, thus allowing facile aqueous media, reducing contamination discharged WWTPs.

This review examines the occurrence and fate of microplastics (MPs) in freshwater, marine, terrestrial environments South Africa. MPs were found Tshwane Johannesburg drinking water samples, with concentrations as high 0.189 particles/L. Concentrations freshwater bodies greater, sometimes reaching 0.33–56 MP levels marine sediments greater than many worldwide averages, particularly along southeast coast (up to 45,867 particles/kg) air 1–5 particles/m3. These values are line figures around globe which stand at 0.1–10 particles/L, 0.3–10 particles/m3 for water, respectively. Low-density PE, PP, PE-HD most prevalent polymers identified. Although there is little data, inappropriate disposal waste a major cause soil contamination, serious concern. The study highlights how important it conduct more research close knowledge gaps, especially regarding groundwater their impact on human health. findings emphasise necessity improved wastewater treatment technologies, public awareness initiatives, stronger laws governing single-use plastics. Standardizing detection techniques, improving our transport, estimating effects exposure health should be main goals future research. Effective cooperation between researchers, legislators, industry necessary mitigation initiatives successful.
