Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) is a complex, polymorphic plant species, which produces vast array of bioactive metabolites, the two major chemical groups being cannabinoids and terpenoids. Nonetheless, psychoactive cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD), are that have monopolized research interest. Currently, more than 600 varieties commercially available, providing access to multitude potent extracts with complex compositions, whose genetics largely inconclusive. Recently introduced legislation on cultivation in many countries represents great opportunity, but at same time, challenge for development (R&D) towards applications pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics, agrochemical industries. Based its versatility unique capabilities deconvolution metabolite composition matrices, metabolomics an ideal bioanalytical tool could greatly assist accelerate R&D.
