Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions can constitute over half of the carbon footprint a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), and emission peaks frequently correlate with nitrite (NO2-) concentrations. However, connections between microbiome high N2O NO2- levels are not well-documented. Here, we characterize microbiomes in several parallel lines WWTP during massive (20% influent nitrogen load) prolonged accumulation most lines, aiming to identify key differences communities low The abundance nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) was extremely accumulation, which also had slightly lower abundances ammonia-oxidizing (AOB). Some incomplete denitrifiers were more abundant accumulation. Lines without higher relative filamentous better floc formation. These findings confirmed our hypothesis that loss NOB caused inducing increased emissions. AOB suspected be main source studied period, likely contribution from heterotrophic denitrifiers. A few species identified as interesting candidates for further study regarding their potential role WWTPs. Long-term monitoring is necessary understand changes might initiate
