New hybrid hydrogel composites based on a mixture of natural polysaccharides (sodium alginate, κ-carrageenan, and chitosan) filled with the clay mineral origin, montmorillonite (MMT), were studied. The structure intercalated/flocculated MMT distribution in interpenetrating network polysaccharide matrix was characterized using FTIR, X-ray diffraction, SEM techniques. Swelling kinetics investigated weight analysis, whereas phase transition water composition hydrogels, by DSC method. Their biosafety estimated Nelyubov method, germination test cress (L. sativum) seeds, metabolic fingerprinting microbial communities dehydrogenase assay. obtained results indicated promising water-retaining properties synthesized materials. hydrogels had good sorption affinity for cadmium (Cd) ions confining bioavailability selected toxic heavy metal. They safe soil microorganisms did not generate stress them. Moreover, they reduce viability pea seeds. Thus, development biosafe comprehensive, effect environment could be considered as successful.

Abstract Purpose Both biochars (BCs) and zeolites (Zs) are defined as soil conditioners affecting various parameters of environment. In most cases, BCs Zs characterized by well-developed specific surface area, high porosity, excellent sorption properties, which is highly helpful in reclamation or conditioning. This literature review compares impact on the physicochemical properties soils well economic aspects their synthesis. Materials methods The was prepared based articles published last 5 years (2018–2023). were selected from ScienceDirect® database using keywords: ‘biochar/zeolite properties’, water retention soil’ aspects’. Results discussion Based available data, it can be stated that both have good sorptive usually contributes to better growth crops. Comparing them choosing one more promising depends purpose type they applied. usage mainly providing organic matter improving structure, while enhance retention. profitability BCs/Zs production largely precursor synthesis method. Conclusions Due fact synthetic environment much less frequently investigated than BCs, research types especially needed. some advisable apply biochar (BC) zeolite (Z) simultaneously. Combinations these materials may provide benefits retention, fertility. Such mixed techniques should near future.
