The Reach and Impact of a Positive Youth Development Program (Project P.A.T.H.S.) in China and Beyond: Review and Reflection

Abstract
There
are
few
validated
positive
youth
development
(PYD)
programs
in
different
regions
of
China.
Utilizing
15
PYD
constructs
extracted
from
effective
the
United
States
and
with
support
Hong
Kong
Jockey
Club
Charities
Trust,
colleagues
five
universities
developed
P.A.T.H.S.
Program
Kong.
In
past
two
decades,
research
team
trained
9,415
potential
program
implementers,
supported
implementation
300
+
high
schools
(357,839
participants)
evaluated
impact
project.
Because
its
overall
success,
was
transplanted
to
mainland
China
Tin
Ka
Ping
Foundation,
adaptation
curriculum
materials.
Before,
during,
after
COVID-19
pandemic,
also
1,589
teachers
related
professionals,
provided
guidance
on
30
(84,000
participants),
program.
This
paper
reviews
achievements,
effects,
beyond.
It
highlights
several
observations
reflections
regarding
future
as
well
around
globe.

Background:
Optimizing
the
development
of
adolescents
in
post-pandemic
era
is
an
urgent
concern.
As
active
initiative,
“Tin
Ka
Ping
P.A.T.H.S.
Project”,
rooted
“Positive
Youth
Development
(PYD)”
approach,
represents
a
curriculum-based
program
aimed
at
fostering
psychosocial
competence
and
well-being
adolescents.
This
study
presents
evaluation
findings
program’s
effectiveness
during
2022–2023
academic
year.
Methods:
Using
validated
“36-item
Subjective
Outcome
Evaluation
scale
(SOES)”,
we
evaluated
perceptions
2165
junior
students
(Mage
=
13.43
years,
SD
0.70
51.3%
females)
3287
senior
16.07
0.65
52.8%
females).
Results:
Replicating
our
previous
before
pandemic,
36-item
SOES
exhibited
satisfactory
validity
reliability
current
study.
Students
commonly
provided
favorable
evaluations
regarding
quality,
implementer
perceived
benefits.
Senior-grade
were
more
likely
to
perceive
positively.
Conclusions:
These
replications
underscore
generalizability
robustness
as
reliable
measurement
tool
across
different
time
periods
research
backgrounds.

Introduction
There

a
notable
scarcity
of
research
examining
the
developmental
trajectories
positive
youth
development
(PYD)
attributes
among
Chinese
preadolescents
and
adolescents
predictive

Methods
Using
four
waves
data,
this
longitudinal
study
investigated
in
China
January
2020
(T1),
June
(T2),
2021
(T3),
2022
(T4).
The
utilized
90-item
“Chinese
Positive
Youth
Development
Scale”
33-item
Family
Assessment
Instrument”
to
assess
PYD
functioning,
respectively.

matched
sample
comprised
2,652
students
from
grades
4
8,
with
an
average
age
10.9
years
(SD
=
1.32;
range
9–15)
at
first
wave
survey,
51.1%
male
(
n
1,354).
Results
Latent
Growth
Curve
Modeling
(LGCM)
revealed
that
followed
quadratic
U-shaped
curve,
characterized
by
initial
decline
T1
T3,
rebound
T3
T4.
Although
time-invariant
covariate
LGCM
indicated
no
significant
gender
difference
level
PYD,
girls
exhibited
slower
rate
faster
growth
time
than
did
boys.

response
to
the
increase
in
adolescent
mental
health
problems,
related
intervention
research
has
flourished.
This
study
examined
2258
studies
captured
by
Web
of
Science,
focusing
on
their
distribution,
interdisciplinary
collaboration,
and
emerging
trends,
using
bibliometric
analysis.
Our
findings
revealed
a
rise
enhanced
collaboration
across
disciplines,
with
from
United
States,
Australia,
Kingdom
showing
high
academic
output,
intellectual
impact,
strong
scientific
partnerships.
However,
there
is
noticeable
Western-centrism
research.
Identifying
current
trends
key
areas
focus
offers
valuable
insights
for
future
practices
child
health.
