Abstract This article explores the use of islands as tools geographical and intellectual containment - or what we call “islanding” in scientific policy literature about gene drive technologies conservation. In first part article, explore narrative contained on discuss how it juggles notions localness localization drives their (test) releases. We question possibility containing spread technologically geographically, argue that for conservation strategically combines contradictory reductive understandings containment. The second is devoted to reflection nonlocal concerns local decisions. attempts legitimize through decision-making evade normative nonlocalizability risk instrumentalizing communities agendas. Our overarching conceptual aim therefore open up a domain thinking around demarcation our world – political, decisions, reality vital importance this technological decision-making.
