With clear links between an individual’s sense of nature connectedness, their psychological wellbeing, and engagement in nature-friendly behaviours, efforts to improve people’s relationships with can help unite human planetary wellbeing. In the context a rapidly growing evidence base, this paper updates previous meta-analytic reviews explore impact (quasi-) experimental manipulations field interventions on connectedness adult populations. The analysis examines relative effects type contact (direct or indirect), quality (active passive) timing (single session, repeated practice residential). Results show medium positive short-term mean effect similar sizes for immediate sustained increases. No size differences were observed different types contact, quality, engagement. Follow-up measures mostly used studies involving regular practices. An agenda future research is put forward, emphasising need examining wider range activities, greater understanding factors leading increases design testing practices connection, initiatives that engage people nature, create conditions encourage activities.

Abstract Within a generation, children's lives have largely moved indoors, with the loss of free‐ranging exploration nearby natural world, even as research indicates that direct experiences nature in childhood contribute to care for across life span. In response, many conservation organizations advocate connecting children nature, and there has been rising interest measuring young people's connectedness understanding how it relates their well‐being stewardship behaviour creating programs increase connection. This article reviews literature on these topics, covering both quantitative qualitative studies. It notes this emphasizes positive emotions, global environmental changes biodiversity accelerate. Young emotions worry, frustration sadness they learn about degradation also express are connected biosphere. Therefore review includes people cope information large‐scale problems, identifies practices sustain hope. The concludes by suggesting connection coping change can benefit from integration. In sustainability science, revising the paradigms that separate humans from nature is considered a powerful 'leverage point' in pursuit of transformations. The coupled social-ecological and human-environment systems perspectives at heart science have, many ways, enhanced recognition across academic, civil, policy business spheres are inextricably connected. However, retaining substantialist assumptions where 'social' 'ecological' refer to different classes entity interact, insist on inextricability theory, while requiring researchers extricate them practice – thus inadvertently reproducing separation they seek repair. Consequently, increasingly drawing scholarship 'relational turn' humanities social sciences propose paradigm shift for science: away focusing interactions between entities, towards emphasizing continually unfolding processes relations. Yet there remains widespread uncertainty about origins, promises challenges using relational approaches. this paper, we identify four themes thinking processes; embodied experience; reconstructing language concepts; ethics/practices care highlight ways which these being drawn science. We conclude by critically discussing how approaches might contribute (i) (ii) transformations sustainability. Relational foster more dynamic, holistic accounts human-nature connectedness; situated diverse knowledges decision-making; new domains methods intervention nurture relationships place practice.

The United Nations (UN) recently declared 2021 to 2030 the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Against this background, we review recent social-ecological systems research and summarize key themes that could help improve ecosystem restoration in dynamic social contexts. relate resilience adaptability, stewardship navigation of change, relational values, coevolution human ecological systems, long-range connections, leverage points for transformation. We recommend two cross-cutting new foci; namely: (i) post hoc cross-sectional assessments projects; (ii) transdisciplinary 'living labs' accompany projects as they unfold. With global agendas increasingly taking a perspective, recasting endeavor offers exciting opportunities both practice.

In the last ten years, 'nature' and biophilic design have received widespread attention in architecture, especially response to growing environmental challenges. However, open questions controversies remain regarding conceptualizing addressing practice research. This study conducts a literature review discuss as theoretical framework interpret architecture. The following are answered: (1) How has concept of emerged, how can it be defined? (2) what ways contribute goals sustainable architecture? (3) What key strategies design? identifies compares frameworks explains their major elements. We then analyse benefits (e.g., enhance health, well-being, productivity, biodiversity, circularity) achieving sustainability, framed through UN Sustainable Development Goals. results indicate that is more complex richer than mere application vegetation buildings; broadens variety encompassing different types nature from physical, sensory, metaphorical, morphological, material spiritual. Moreover, knowledge gaps identified motivate future research critical reflections on practices.

Current sustainability challenges – including biodiversity loss, pollution and land-use change require new ways of understanding, acting in caring for the landscapes we live in. The concept stewardship is increasingly used research, policy practice to articulate describe responses these challenges. However, there are multiple meanings framings across this wide user base that reflect different disciplinary purposes, assumptions expertise, as well a long history use both academic lay contexts. Stewardship may therefore be considered 'boundary object'; is, conceptual tool enables collaboration dialogue between actors whilst allowing differences perception. Abstract This article provides a rationale for inner transformation as key and hitherto underresearched dimension of sustainability transformations. Inner relates to various aspects human existence interactions such consciousness, mindsets, values, worldviews, beliefs, spirituality human–nature connectedness. The draws on Meadows’ leverage points approach, places intervene in system, reveal the relevance system change towards sustainability. Based insights from series dialogue reflection workshops literature review, this three important contributions transformations research: first, it increases our conceptual understanding its sustainability; second, outlines concrete elements transformation-sustainability nexus relation points; third, presents practical examples illustrating how work with supporting transformation. In sum, paper develops systematized structured approach transformation, including identification deep, i.e., highly influential, points. addition, critically discusses often contentious divergent perspectives shows related challenges. Finally, current developments research well further needs are identified.
