Abstract The agri-food system is facing a range of social-ecological threats, many which are caused and amplified by industrial agriculture. In response, numerous sustainable agriculture narratives have emerged, proposing solutions to the challenges system. One such narrative that has recently risen prominence regenerative However, drivers for rapid emergence not well understood. Furthermore, its transformative potential supporting more underexplored. Through genealogical analysis four prominent narratives; organic agriculture, conservation intensification, agroecology; we consider how agriculture’s growing momentum can be contextualised within existing explore implications this might potential. Agriculture is a significant contributor to global environmental problems such as greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss. The EU China are key players in this regard, both have introduced policies for sustainable agriculture. This research takes critical policy analysis approach investigate the extent which current Chinese agricultural reproduce discourses commensurate with transition more Drawing on four-phase methodology analysis, we analyse documents from China, comparing them positioning heuristic scale of weak strong sustainability. Three positions sustainability distinguished, namely techno-economic/productionist, blended, agroecological/ruralist. Our findings suggest that reproduced dominant techno-economic/productionist position, leaning towards sustainability, while aligned fundamental transformation agriculture marginalised. Such shared orientation rooted policymaking processes albeit manifested differently two political contexts. Based our reflections common patterns underlying discourses, call deeper cultural social critique participatory reflexive embrace alternative discourses.

In a time marked by growing environmental and societal challenges, where multiple planetary boundaries are being crossed, the way we conduct business practices needs to be rethought. Regenerative models offer path towards more responsible future incorporating strategies that go beyond net zero focus on actively restoring natural social systems they operate in, creating holistic positive impact. To date, much of research this topic is conceptual there need for empirical insights how regenerative can implemented. This study uses purposive sampling comprehensive practice review 84 cases from 15 sectors, build novel Business Case Database. A typology six archetypal was also derived, including: (1) leadership, (2) nature regeneration, (3) (4) sourcing, (5) human health & wellbeing focus, (6) employee level focus. The predominant sectors with innovations were food, consumer goods fashion. Many companies found employing concurrently, while collaborating local organisations. While some may argue cannot successful in competitive market, results contain examples stable businesses pursuing dating back 1870's. aim database serve as inspiration further model experimentation. Regenerative agriculture (RA) is an approach to farming pursued globally for sustaining agricultural production and improving ecosystem services environmental benefits. However, the lack of a standardized definition limited bioeconomic assessments hinder understanding application RA more broadly. An initial systematic review revealed wide range definitions regenerative agriculture, although it generally understood as framework consisting principles, practices, or outcomes aimed at soil health, biodiversity, climate resilience, function. To address existing gaps, we propose working that integrates socioeconomic acknowledges significance local knowledge context complement established scientific knowledge. A second identified indicators, tools, models assessing biophysical economic aspects RA. Additionally, third literature identify potential integration advanced analytical methods into future assessments, including artificial intelligence machine learning. Finally, case study, developed conceptual evaluation in mixed setting Australia. This advocates transdisciplinary approach, promoting comprehensive assessment through collaboration, integrated data, holistic frameworks, stakeholder engagement. By defining, evaluating methods, proposing pragmatic framework, this advances guides research assess fit practices defined contexts.

Despite its being still a somewhat vague concept, regenerative agriculture has progressively been gaining momentum and popularity in recent years. While discussing the meaning of term agriculture, we propose to link with safe just Earth system boundaries framework, as basis for generation paradigm that could robustly ground an appealing narrative nourish vocation new farmers agronomists. Regenerative agriculture is an alternative approach to farming that has been gaining traction and interest among farmers due its potential reduce input costs, improve soil health, increase the resilience of systems. This paper undertakes a practice-based analysis farmers, applying lens regenerative agriculture. Surveys were developed as part broader project using established methodological framework. Topics adapted with from local stakeholders before being mailed out three regions across Australia (the Western Australian Wheatbelt, Eyre Peninsula in South Central West New Wales). The research clustered into two groups: those who are best-practices fall inside scope agriculture, not. similarities differences farmer attributes, well self-reported knowledge levels information sources used by each group explored. Results indicate belief anthropogenic climate change may be one primary divides between groups, therefore possible driver best-practice implementation. findings provide insight perceptions for assist dissemination amongst managing our environment.
