Forest fires represent a natural element in the dynamics of forest ecosystems. This study investigated impact large-scale fire 2022 (ca. 1300 ha) on epigeic ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae). The research was conducted coniferous forests at six pairwise sites: burnt and unburnt dead spruce from bark beetles, clear cut, healthy sites. Each site replicated four plots, with two pitfall traps deployed within each plot. In total, 48 (6 × 4 2) were installed April 2023. It tested how individual sites affected similarity beetle communities, whether they contained similar life guilds, significantly affects abundance pyrophilous beetles. A total 5952 individuals 63 species recorded. We observed significant decline clear-cut (73% 77.5%, respectively) compared to Conversely, increased by 88% site. Abstract Anthropogenic climate change poses a major threat to ecosystems and their biodiversity. Forests, for example, are suffering from climate-amplified disturbances like droughts or pest outbreaks. Throughout Europe, such resulted in large-scale diebacks of managed spruce stands recent years. While often salvage-logged reduce economic losses, it is still rather unclear how post-disturbance management affects forest biodiversity anthropogenic stands. By comparing epigeal beetle communities among sites, standing deadwood patches, succession areas, we show that dieback can be chance conservation. Even though individual families responded partly differently management, enhanced the overall diversity ground-dwelling beetles compared salvage logging, while sites were intermediate. We also community composition functional guilds vary strongly between categories. Implications insect conservation : suggest set-aside areas natural enhance taxonomic diversity, especially deadwood-dependent species. As different types support species assemblages, well-planned including partial abandonment logging consideration succession, may counter losses forests.

Abstract Climate change and biodiversity loss strongly affect ecosystems. In recent years, forests have suffered substantially from climate-induced disturbances resulting in bark beetle outbreaks coniferous forests. forest plantations, such often cause large-scale diebacks, which are frequently salvage-logged. However, the consequences of natural subsequent management for ecosystem services within plantations largely unclear. Because they comprise good bioindicators alterations, we here investigated epigeal spider diversity community composition three post-disturbance approaches former spruce western Germany. Taxonomic spiders was significantly enhanced on salvage-logged secondary succession compared with standing deadwood sites. Nevertheless, latter provided a refuge specialists, moisture shade-loving as well smaller species, whereas other two categories were mostly inhabited by larger associated open habitats. all harbored highly distinct communities divergent functional guilds, propose application variety beetle-affected plantations. The habitat heterogeneity will likely enhance taxonomic groups. Study Implications: Bark became severe affected stands usually aims at mitigating economic losses, but current crisis, it is increasingly important to consider ecological consequences. This study shows that salvage logging or can increase diversity, although species preferred All assemblages characterized different guilds. Our results indicated influenced canopy openness, microclimate, competition rather than management. Therefore, practices should include diverse foster many assemblages.

Abstract Intense human disturbances, including changes in the balance between open and forested habitats, have impacted squamate reptile populations western Mediterranean. This region has experienced a notable increase woodland cover, driven by gradual abandonment of traditional agriculture, native forest regeneration intensive reforestation. Microclimatic associated with dense canopies forests or tree plantations could affect assemblages. In this study, we tested hypothesis that squamates (amphisbaenians, lizards snakes) would respond negatively to denser crown taller vegetation. Our study focused on Iberian Italian Peninsulas included 56 species. The analyses indicated (>50% canopy cover) support limited number species (24–26 species). greatest richness phylogenetic diversity were found low formations (2‒9.9 m stand height 20‒49% areas scattered trees shrubs (5‒19% cover), supporting 40–46 To reforestation efforts conservation, lack threatened should be prioritised.
