The relative competitive ability of native and alien species, which consists effect (CE) response (CR), has often been invoked as a key determinant invasion success. Previous studies have reported that an species with high CE /or low CR would successfully invade species. However, no yet empirically examined the hypothesis or tested consistency outcomes predicted by CE-CR framework modern coexistence theory (MCT). To fill this research gap, we conducted pairwise competition experiment between five quantified based on their biomass in absence presence one competitor, both MCT frameworks. Abstract Natural microbial ecosystems harbor substantial diversity of competing species. Explaining such is challenging, because in classic theories it extremely infeasible for a large community species to stably coexist homogeneous environments. One important aspect mostly overlooked these theories, however, that microbes commonly share genetic materials with their neighbors through horizontal gene transfer (HGT), which enables the dynamic change growth rates due fitness effects mobile elements (MGEs). Here, we establish framework competition by accounting flow among microbes. Combining theoretical derivation and numerical simulations, show many conditions HGT can surprisingly overcome biodiversity limit predicted model allow coexistence competitors, enabling neutrality In contrast static proposed previous maintained highly stable against random perturbations fitness. Our work highlights importance considering when addressing fundamental ecological questions world has broad implications design engineering complex consortia.

ABSTRACT Classical models from theoretical ecology are seeing increasing uptake in microbial ecology, but there remains rich potential for closer cross‐pollination. Here we explore opportunities stronger integration of ecological theory into research (and vice versa) through the lens so‐called “modern” coexistence theory. Coexistence can be used to disentangle contributions different mechanisms (e.g., resource partitioning, environmental variability) make species coexistence. We begin with a short primer on fundamental concepts theory, an emphasis relevance communities. next present systematic review, which highlights paucity empirical applications systems. In light this gap, then identify and discuss ways which: (i) help answer applied questions particularly spatio‐temporally heterogeneous environments, (ii) experimental systems leveraged validate advance Finally, address several unique often surmountable challenges posed by systems, as well some conceptual limitations. Nevertheless, thoughtful presents wealth advancement both ecology.

Abstract Reef recovery following a disturbance largely depends on successful coral recruitment and the absence of chronic stressors. However, recent events show increasing homogenization, with dominant species replacing high diversity that once characterized these ecosystems. In this study, we analysed nine-year dataset (2012–2020) describing reef towards Pocillopora-dominated state in Taiwan devastating typhoon. Tracking eight cohorts, assessed growth, survival reproduction. Pocillopora peaked during first three years, but mortality surged fourth year. The initial generation had highest rates, while by fifth year, newly settled individuals failed to survive beyond two years. By 2020, 83% consisted corals from 2012–2016, 38% originating alone (2012). This pioneer was primary contributor growth reproduction, emphasizing reef's reliance early settlers, leading an ageing community. While generations were critical recovery, their dominance may have driven gradual loss biodiversity. Our findings highlight importance development underscores risk only few after recovery.

AbstractThe metapopulation concept offers significant explanatory power in ecology and evolutionary biology. Metapopulations, a set of spatially distributed populations linked by dispersal, their community ecosystem level analogs, metacommunity meta-ecosystem models, tend to be more stable regionally than locally. This fact is largely attributable the interplay spatiotemporal heterogeneity dispersal (the inflationary effect). AbstractSpatial-temporal variation in environmental conditions is ubiquitous nature. This simultaneously impacts survival, reproduction, and movement of individuals thereby the rate at which metapopulations grow. Using tools stochastic demography, metapopulation growth decomposed into five components corresponding to temporal, spatial, spatial-temporal fitness spatial covariation dispersal fitness. While temporal always reduces rate, all other sources can either increase or reduce rate. Increases occur by reducing generating a positive fitness-density covariance where tend concentrate higher-quality patches. For example, autocorrelations variability generate this for less dispersive populations but decrease it highly (e.g., migratory species). Negative have opposite effects. Positive covariances between future fitness, on short long timescales, rates. These arise unexpected ways. win-stay, lose-shift strategy negatively autocorrelated environments that exceed negative covariances. decomposition provides way quantify relative importance fundamental persistence.

Abstract The metapopulation perspective is an important conceptual framework in ecology and evolutionary ecology. Metapopulations are spatially distributed populations linked by dispersal.
