This
paper
explores
the
connection
between
social
policy
and
immigration
law
as
one
feature
of
migration
governance
to
advance
internal
bordering
border
internalization.

Abstract
The
article
addresses
the
tension
between
internalization
of
a
violent
border
regime
intent
on
preempting
migrant
arrivals
and
everyday
democratic
struggle
against
that
regime.
It
builds
ethnographic
fieldwork
in
Rome
to
illuminate
conflicting
political
imaginations
existing
practices
already
plural,
albeit
unequal,
Italian
polity.

one
hand,
we
see
bordered
democracy.

democracy

investing
nationalizing
itself,
by
fortifying
Mediterranean

lethal
shoring
up
social,
economic,
racialized
boundaries.
