“To become a gentleman” and other metaphors in the transition to university

The
transition
to
university
life
represents
a
crucial
opportunity
for
development,
characterized
by
both
academic
and
personal
challenges.
This
study
examines
the
case
of
Pablo,
20-year-old
Afro-Colombian
student
first
in
his
family
attend
university.
Using
cultural-semiotic
psychological
framework,
this
research
explores
meaning-making
processes
that
Pablo
undergoes
during
year
studies.
Through
interviews
focus
groups,
reveals
tensions
continuous
transformations
meanings
identity,
masculinity,
independence,
responsibility.
These
findings
suggest
Pablo’s
experience
not
only
serves
as
scenario
growth
but
also
pivotal
period
identity
transformation.
His
navigation
pressures,
social
interactions,
perception
role
man
complex
dynamics
adjusting
new
contexts.
illustrates
how
deeply
ingrained
cultural
can
facilitate
hinder
change
transition.
study’s
implications
extend
understanding
environments
either
support
or
challenge
development
students
from
vulnerable
backgrounds.

As
part
of
a
theoretical
and
friendly
dialogue
that
we
have
developed
over
the
years
(Marková
et
al.,
2020,
2022;
Zittoun,
2017),
both
realised
our
newly
published
books
appeared
almost
simultaneously
at
same
publisher
(Marková,
2023;
2024).
To
pursue
this
dialogue,
proposed
to
review
each
other’s
book,
then
had
on
these
two
reviews.
The
present
“dialogical
review”
has
thus
three
parts:
first
presents
some
points
emerging
from
dialogue;
second
is
Ivana
Marková’s
making
dialogical
theory.
