Abstract Amidst the growing prevalence of anxiety disorders and limitations existing treatments, this research paper posits that we need to expand treatment options rather than simply include more people in therapy or on medication. The popularity breathwork has grown enormously but is still process creating a robust body evidence validate its utility. This employs true-experimental design compare pretest posttest measures utilizing Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (ZAS) between group control group. participated six weekly sessions, each lasting 90 minutes, while was placed waitlist. study’s results are significant with large effect size, as CCB reduced symptoms by mean 10.56 points ZAS compared group’s reduction just 1.89. substantial difference highlights potential an effective, low-cost, accessible intervention for anxiety. Furthermore, study pioneers investigation effectiveness online environment, offering insights into adaptability broader application therapies. supports integration mainstream mental health practices, addressing increasing demand effective treatments.

Abstract Breathwork is an understudied school of practices involving intentional respiratory modulation to induce altered state consciousness (ASC). We simultaneously investigate the phenomenological and neural dynamics breathwork by combining Temporal Experience Tracing, a quantitative methodology that preserves temporal subjective experience, with low-density portable EEG devices. Fourteen novice participants completed course up 28 sessions—of 20, 40, or 60 min—in days, yielding neurophenomenological dataset 301 sessions. Using hypothesis-driven data-driven approaches, we found “psychedelic-like” experiences were associated increased Lempel-Ziv complexity during breathwork. Exploratory analyses showed aperiodic exponent power spectral density—but not oscillatory alpha power—yielded similar associations. Non-linear features, like exponent, neurally map both multidimensional composite positive experiences, aspects psychedelic-like experience states such as high bliss.

Objectives: Continuous connected breathing (CCB) is a high-frequency technique without breath retention. This study examines changes in electroencephalogram (EEG) band power and heart rate variability (HRV) before, during after breathwork intervention of 3 rounds 40 CCB versus normal healthy volunteers. Materials Methods: Thirty-three volunteers, aged between 19 23 years, participated the ( n = 15; female 7; mean age 21.5 years) group, while control group consisted 18 individuals 18; male 11; 19.6 years). After acquiring baseline measures, engaged practice online for 10 days, continued with their usual activities. EEG HRV signals were recorded both groups days. Post-intervention, practised breathwork, breathed normally signal acquisition. was 1-min durations at five different time events (1 st , 4 th 5 7 min) according to protocol. continuously entire min, readings corresponding recording intervals analysed. acquired using an Enobio-8 cap dry electrodes pre-frontal (FP1 FP2), temporal (T7 T8), central (C3 C4) occipital (O1 O2) regions. data from Polar H7/H10 chest strap sensors through Bluetooth Elite app on android phone later processed Kubios software. MATLAB software extract delta (0– 3.5Hz), theta (4–7 Hz), alpha (8–13 beta (14–29 Hz) gamma frequencies (30–50 Hz). The arranged as before-after statistically analysed within between-group t -tests significance means. Results: There overall quantitative change −2 units −0.03 group. A significant decrease found (−2.27), (−1.7), (−1.8) (−2.27) brain waves (FP1, FP8), (T7, T8) (O1, regions compared before increase (+2.8) higher left right hemisphere. Bilateral average ranged −1.6 −2.6 −0.1 +4.9 parameters reduced but significance. improved though not significant. Conclusion: days breathworks (3 rounds) min/day may reduce delta, theta, waves. Altered states of consciousness (ASCs), induced e.g. during psychedelic-assisted therapy, show potential to treat prevalent mental health disorders like depression and posttraumatic stress disorder. However, access such treatments is restricted by legal, medical, financial barriers. Circular breathwork may present a non-pharmacological hence more accessible alternative engage similar therapeutic processes. Scientific studies are only just emerging its physiological psychological mechanisms largely unknown. Here, we track experiential dynamics throughout session, comparing two forms breathwork: Holotropic Conscious-Connected breathwork. We that reduction in end-tidal CO2 pressure due deliberate hyperventilation significantly correlated ASC onset (r = -0.46; p < 0.001). Based on standard questionnaires (MEQ-30 11-DASC), the ASCs evoked resembled those produced psychedelics across several domains as ego dissolution, their depth predicted follow-on effects, including improved well-being reduced depressive symptoms. Further analysis showed different approaches highly outcomes. Our findings identify boundary conditions for arise context, shedding light functional well psychotherapeutic tool.

Abstract High ventilation breathwork is a breathing practice that involves deep, accelerated over prolonged duration (> 15 minutes). This basic underpins wide range of traditions, from Pranayama to Holotropic and Conscious-Connected breathwork. Anecdotal reports suggest it can benefit physical mental health, often by evoking altered states consciousness. However, scientific research on still in its infancy. study examines the physiological experiential effects Breathwork (CCB). Specifically, we characterize subjective experiences using Natural Language Processing analyses semi-structured phenomenological interviews, relate them changes Heart-Rate Variability (HRV). Finally, disentangle technique itself context effects, tested whether presence evocative music modified impact session. Our findings indicate CCB consistently triggers consciousness, accompanied increased emotional intensity decreased HRV during session, but baseline following increase was larger for subjects who experienced wider emotions not predicted peri-session HRV. suggests post-session improvements might be product catharsis rather than purely hormesis. none these significantly modulated music, indicating they largely rely itself.

Abstract High ventilation breathwork with retention (HVBR) might be beneficial for mental/physical health and has been growing in popularity over the past decade. However, little research investigated potential therapeutic effects of brief, remotely delivered HVBR tolerability profile this technique. This study (NCT06064474) was largest blinded randomised-controlled trial on to date which 200 young, healthy adults balanced gender were randomly allocated blocks 2 by remote software 3 weeks 20 min daily (fast breathing long breath holds) or a placebo comparator (15 breaths/min short holds).
