A large English population of the temperate tuberous Greater Butterfly-orchid, Platanthera chlorantha, was monitored through a 16-year period. Each June number flowering plants counted and 60 were measured in situ for four morphological traits, selected both ease measurement their contrasting contributions to life history species. Trait data tested annually pairwise combinations individual plants, before mean values throughout study period regressed cross-correlated against each other local meteorological parameters. Labellar spur length proved be more constrained than either flower or stem height, rarely yielded statistically significant correlations with whereas three remaining traits reliably showed modest but correlations. Mean coefficients variation differed only modestly among years few any meaningful trends. Spring rainfall insolation had no detectable effect on that June; instead, they impacted trait expression during following year, presumably as result differential resourcing replacement tubers formed previous year. High spring year t-1 increased leaf area height t, widely fluctuating highest immediately those characterised by relatively dry and/or sunny springs. The "decision" is taken summer, though it may modified winter/spring abortion above-ground organs. proportion electing parameter impacts significantly annual reproductive output, emphasising under-rated difficulty evolving directional selection. Any attempt predict behaviour plant species response climate change must integrate information demography history, habitat preference intimate symbioses.
